An overview of Bitcoin's Taproot upgrade, which makes transactions more private, less expensive, and will let bitcoin users execute more complex smart contracts

Taylor Locke / CNBC :

Context & Ripple Effects

Taproot has been a year in the making: miners signaled approval back in June, when the upgrade was locked in for a November activation, and the network flipped it on over the weekend as the first change to Bitcoin's core code since Segregated Witness in 2017. Today's piece is the explainer layer on top of that activation — what the privacy, fee, and smart-contract promises actually mean now that they are live.

First-order effects

  • Bitcoin users transacting after the activation get cheaper and more private payments immediately, since Taproot makes multi-signature and complex spends indistinguishable from simple ones on-chain.
  • Developers gain the ability to build more sophisticated smart contracts directly on Bitcoin, a capability the network previously lacked relative to programmable chains.

Second-order effects

  • Smart-contract builders who defaulted to other platforms now have a reason to target Bitcoin, forcing competing chains to defend their developer base on functionality rather than just scale.
  • The successful miner-coordinated activation sets a working playbook for future protocol changes, lowering the perceived risk of proposing the next upgrade.

Third-order effects

  • If the post-Taproot momentum holds, Bitcoin's identity shifts incrementally from a pure settlement layer toward a programmable one — a direction already visible in the OP_CAT proposal now front-running the next upgrade debate, which would push further toward DeFi-style applications.
  • Upgrade governance itself becomes the structural battleground: with changes this rare, each activation cycle concentrates enormous weight on miner signaling and community consensus.

The trend: Bitcoin is re-entering a phase of deliberate protocol evolution, where infrequent, consensus-gated upgrades like Taproot gradually expand the network from payments toward programmability.

At long last, BIP341/342 ("taproot") are active on Bitcoin mainnet. Thanks to everyone involved for getting us this far! The real work will be in building wallets/protocols that build on top of it to make use of its advantages. I'm very excited to see where that takes us.

Taproot being priced in means (a) people didn't expect a disaster, (b) there wasn't a disaster, (c) there weren't unannounced bonuses that had somehow been secret. All those are Good for Bitcoin. (Might be a bit soon to be sure they're all true, hopefully not a jinx at least) htt…

#Taproot introduces Schnorr signatures that can make more complex transactions on Bitcoin - such as those from multi-signature wallets - look like just any other transaction, hence improving the privacy and security of the transactions. https://www.theblockcrypto.com/ ...
