PubNub, which provides messaging, presence, and other data-based APIs for apps, raises a $65M Series E led by Raine Group, bringing its total funding to $130M+

Context & Ripple Effects

PubNub has been building real-time messaging and data-stream infrastructure for apps and IoT devices since at least its 2019 Series D, when it raised $23M to power data streams for real-time apps and connected devices. The new $65M Series E more than doubles its disclosed funding past the $130M mark, with media-focused investor Raine Group taking the lead.

The raise lands in a busy year for developer-facing realtime tooling: in March, Stream raised $38M to let developers embed chat and activity feeds with minimal code, and in June Ably raised $70M co-led by Insight Partners and Dawn Capital for its Pub/Sub platform. Investors are clearly treating realtime infrastructure as an investable layer rather than a feature.

First-order effects

  • PubNub gets a war chest sized against its closest rivals' recent hauls — Ably's $70M and Stream's $38M — giving it room to compete on scale, reliability, and breadth of APIs (messaging, presence) without near-term revenue pressure.

Second-order effects

  • Ably and Stream now face a better-capitalized incumbent selling overlapping capabilities, pushing competition toward pricing, SDK coverage, and lock-in of developer workflows rather than raw feature parity.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, realtime messaging consolidates into a handful of well-funded API platforms that absorb what developers once built in-house on sockets and queues — a structural shift from self-managed infrastructure to purchased primitives, with IoT device traffic widening the market beyond chat apps.

The trend: Realtime communication is becoming a bought-in cloud primitive, with successive nine-figure rounds for PubNub, Ably, and Stream marking the layer's consolidation into dedicated infrastructure platforms.
