Instagram brings back support for Twitter Card previews after removing the feature in 2012

Instagram is bringing back support for Twitter Card previews starting today.  Now when users share an Instagram link on Twitter, a preview of the post will be shown in the tweet.

TechCrunch Aisha Malik

Context & Ripple Effects

Instagram is reopening a distribution path it had closed years earlier: Instagram links shared on Twitter will again carry visual post information instead of appearing as bare links. Twitter had already used its Card format for embedded media, including Spotify audio clips in timelines, making Instagram posts another content type rendered inside its feed.

The significance is not a new Instagram publishing format but a change in how its existing posts travel across a competing social feed. Later coverage of X's plan to restore link-preview headlines underscores how link-card presentation remains a product-level control point for the conversation layer.

First-order effects

  • People sharing Instagram posts on Twitter immediately get an in-tweet preview, giving recipients more context before opening Instagram.
  • Instagram gains a richer referral surface on Twitter, while Twitter keeps more visual context inside its own timeline.

Second-order effects

  • Twitter's card system becomes more valuable as a rendering layer for third-party media, extending the role it had already played with embedded Spotify audio.
  • Publishers and platforms that rely on shared links face a clearer incentive to support preview metadata, because bare URLs compete poorly with posts that render directly in-feed.

Third-order effects

  • If reciprocal preview support persists, cross-platform distribution will depend increasingly on the destination network's rules for rendering links rather than on the source platform's post format alone.
  • Link previews become an access-layer lever: platforms can make outbound content more or less useful without changing the underlying post, concentrating control over discovery in the feed owner.

The trend: Social platforms are treating link-preview rendering as a strategic access layer for retaining context and attention inside their feeds.

They said it would never happen... Twitter Card previews start rolling out TODAY. 👀 Now, when you share an Instagram link on Twitter a preview of that post will appear. 🙌 https://twitter.com/...

If you want to share your latest Instagram post on the Twitter timeline too, you're in luck: now when you share a link to an IG post in a Tweet, it'll show up as a card with a preview of the photo. Rolling out on Android, iOS, and web.

It's amazing that Facebook and Twitter have ended this decade-long feud over Instagram previews. But I'll believe the bad feelings really are over when @jack posts on his Instagram account, inactive since the day Facebook bought Instagram. https://www.protocol.com/...

Fun fact: Instagram *used* to have post rendering on Twitter and then broke it to drive more people to the app lol https://twitter.com/...

In case anyone has forgotten the background to this, Twitter cut off Instagram support in 2012 — the culmination of a feud that had been going on ever since Instagram turned down Twitter's acquisition offer in favor of being bought by Facebook https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ... …
