In Senate hearing, TikTok dodges questions about its plans for biometric data collected from US users, after changing its terms of use to allow the practice

Sarah Perez / TechCrunch :

TechCrunch Sarah Perez

Context & Ripple Effects

TikTok's Senate appearance followed its June privacy-policy addition permitting biometric-data collection from US users' content. The hearing put the gap between that permission and TikTok's stated plans before lawmakers.

Later coverage shows the issue widening from biometric data to broader questions about TikTok's US-data handling: the Senate Intelligence Committee sought an FTC investigation, and senators later alleged the company had misled Congress.

First-order effects

  • The Senate receives no clear account from TikTok of how it intends to use biometric data covered by its revised US terms, leaving lawmakers without the answer sought at the hearing.
  • US TikTok users face terms that permit collection of faceprints and voiceprints from their content while the company declines to specify its plans publicly.

Second-order effects

Third-order effects

  • If congressional concerns over disclosure and access continue to compound, TikTok's US-data practices become an ownership and national-policy issue rather than a narrow privacy-terms dispute, consistent with the later House divestment bill.
  • The episode points toward platform privacy oversight centered on whether companies' permissions, data access, and testimony align, not solely on what their written policies allow.

The trend: TikTok's US data governance is becoming a sustained congressional accountability issue, progressing from policy permissions to scrutiny of disclosures, access, and corporate control.

Today, a TikTok executive dodged my questions more than any witness I have seen in my 9 years serving in the Senate. And that is saying something. In my experience, when a witness refuses to answer simple questions, they're hiding something. https://twitter.com/...

Another CT parent wrote how their son was fed a constant stream of TikTok videos related to disordered eating & calorie counting after looking up athletic training. Research has shown that eating disorders & body comparison significantly affects young men on social media. 5/

.@TikTok_us, @Snapchat and @YouTube take beating at U.S. Senate hearing focused on protecting children. Utah @SenMikeLee sets a trap for Snap and catches a basketful of content he calls “wildly inappropriate” for kids. #utahtech #utpol https://www.deseret.com/... https://twitter.…

While I'm slightly encouraged by there being some openness regarding regulation & commitments to allow independent experts access to these platforms, that is a tepid response to a problem that has reached its boiling point. 8/

TikTok, Snapchat & YouTube were in the hot seat before my subcommittee today. Here's my recap. THREAD: These apps drive kids down algorithmic rabbit holes that lead to dangerous places, prey upon their insecurities & encourage more destructive hate, eating disorders&bullying. 1/

These dangerous self-reinforcing & perpetuating vortexes of content are easy to fall into. My office & I did our own research. After just a few hrs of watching weight loss & eating disorder content on YouTube, our homepage almost exclusively recommended these types of videos. 2/ …

I've heard from parents across CT about the danger of these apps. Nora's 11 yr old daughter was shown extreme Youtube & TikTok videos about weight loss, eventually leading to an anorexia diagnosis. Luckily, she is now in treatment, but the emotional/physical costs were high. 4/

Senator Cruz just absolutely filleted Michael Beckerman and TikTok. There will be bipartisan agreement on this. This was the climax of 7 minutes of @SenTedCruz trying to get a simple answer to whether TikTok user data based on its privacy policy can go back to China affiliate. /8…
