Instagram says it is testing Activity Feed notifications in the US that will alert users of service outages and technical issues

One week after a massive Facebook outage that took all of the social network's apps offline for more than six hours, Instagram says it's testing notifications … Source: Instagram .

Engadget Karissa Bell

Context & Ripple Effects

Instagram is adding outage communication after a record of disruptions affecting both it and Facebook, including intermittent global outages and a later incident that affected News Feed, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. The US test turns that recurring operational problem into a visible product feature.

The move also extends Instagram's existing use of in-product alerts: it previously tested a mid-feed “all caught up” notice and expanded notifications to web apps and Instagram Lite. Activity Feed now becomes a channel for platform health as well as user activity.

First-order effects

  • US test participants can receive official Activity Feed notices about service outages and technical issues, rather than having to infer a disruption from failed app behavior.
  • Instagram gains a defined in-app surface for communicating during incidents to the users included in the test.

Second-order effects

  • Outage notices add another class of message to Instagram's notification system, increasing the importance of how the product distinguishes operational alerts from routine activity updates.
  • Facebook's prior cross-app outages make clearer incident communication more consequential for Instagram users when failures affect services beyond a single feature.

Third-order effects

  • If Instagram broadens the test, service-status communication would become a built-in responsibility of social-app notification design rather than an ad hoc response to outages.

The trend: Consumer platforms are turning recurring reliability incidents into productized, in-app status communications.

We're going to test out new notifications when certain parts of Instagram aren't working, and we notice that people have a lot of questions. We want to make it easier to understand what's going on, directly from the source. For now, we'll be testing it out just in the US. https:/…

VERY curious to see if this will answer people's questions, or just infuriate them further. This is why there's a judicial system with checks and balances, bureaucracy, and takes forever to pass through. We will build it again! (For better AND worse) #NewTwitter #BetterHumans htt…

We've been working on new tools to help people understand what's going on with their accounts. First, we're testing an in-app notification to explain when certain parts of IG aren't working and launching a new feature called Account Status. https://about.instagram.com/ ...
