AWS had set the prior public benchmark with a 2.3Tbps Shield mitigation in February 2020. Azure’s reported response moves the comparison from a one-off AWS claim to a direct resilience contest between the two cloud platforms.

The episode also sits at the start of an escalation visible in later Azure coverage: Microsoft subsequently reported a 3.47Tbps attack on an Asian customer, making the 2.4Tbps event an early marker of rising attack scale rather than an isolated ceiling.
