Cloudflare announces object storage service R2, running across its global network, and takes aim at AWS by forgoing data egress fees

R2 is Cloudflare converting an argument into a product. Two months ago it accused AWS of marking up egress fees roughly 80x over cost; back in 2018 it organized Microsoft, Google, Backblaze and others into the Bandwidth Alliance to push networking costs down. Launching its own object store with zero egress fees is the escalation of that campaign from advocacy to direct competition.

The move also completes a stack built on the network Cloudflare already operates. Workers gave developers edge compute in 2018; R2 gives them somewhere to put their data next to it, on infrastructure that predates any of AWS's region-based economics.

First-order effects

  • Cloudflare gains a storage product to pair with Workers, letting developers run apps and hold data on one global network instead of splitting workloads between edge compute and a hyperscaler's buckets.
  • AWS faces a rival pricing its flagship object storage around zero egress fees, directly attacking the bandwidth line item Cloudflare has spent three years arguing is inflated.

Second-order effects

  • Other cloud providers — including Bandwidth Alliance members like Google and Backblaze — are pressured to follow on egress pricing or defend their margins publicly, since Cloudflare can now undercut them with a shipped product rather than a petition.
  • Workloads that stayed on AWS because moving data out was prohibitively expensive gain an exit path, shifting negotiation leverage toward customers at renewal time.

Third-order effects

  • If zero-egress becomes table stakes, hyperscaler economics shift from charging for data movement to monetizing compute, storage capacity, and services — a structural reversal of the lock-in model that made switching clouds costly.
  • Object storage competition moves toward distribution: whoever owns the global network closest to users sets the price floor, echoing the pattern IBM entered when it launched cold storage years behind AWS.

The trend: Edge networks are turning into full cloud platforms, using free egress as the wedge to unbundle hyperscalers' most defensible margin.
