Cloudflare announces object storage service R2, running across its global network, and takes aim at AWS by forgoing data egress fees

R2 is Cloudflare converting an argument into a product. Two months ago it accused AWS of marking up egress fees roughly 80x over cost; back in 2018 it organized Microsoft, Google, Backblaze and others into the Bandwidth Alliance to push networking costs down. Launching its own object store with zero egress fees is the escalation of that campaign from advocacy to direct competition.
The move also completes a stack built on the network Cloudflare already operates. Workers gave developers edge compute in 2018; R2 gives them somewhere to put their data next to it, on infrastructure that predates any of AWS's region-based economics.
