Why does search matter? Isn't it a lovely free service for you to check on health symptoms or stalk a highschool sweetheart? Well yes and no. Google of course makes a heck of a lot of money from ads. And those search queries help serve you ads for whatever ails you.

When I say “a heck” that means over $180 billion in total revenue for Google last year. Google is fighting a fine of $5 billion, a record for the EU. It's a lot but arguably what matters more is how far the EU can go to crimp big tech.

This court hearing focuses on whether the EU was right to rule Google's Android contracts illegal. It won't go into whether the EU's order for Google to set things sort-of right helped erode Google's massive market share for mobile search. Spoiler: it didn't.

Nonsense, says @EU_Commission lawyer. Google was well aware that restrictive contracts that pushed its own search and web apps on Android phones would help it build a near-monopoly for search.
