Researcher discovers an AI-powered service that makes it incredibly easy for users to generate nonconsensual deepfake porn by uploading a picture of a face
Deepfake researchers have long feared the day this would arrive. — The website is eye-catching for its simplicity.
There's been so much talk about hypothetical deepfakes being used to start World War 3, but the real harm is already happening to women through the creation of nonconsensual deepfaked porn. Great reporting by @_KarenHao on a highly questionable AI app https://www.technologyreview…
In the end, we chose not to the name the service or use screenshots or quotes from the website. I also spent a lot of time Googling all of the terms and phrases I used in the piece to make sure they didn't uniquely identify the site.
The app was brought to my attention by @HenryAjder, who has been tracking the rise and evolution of synthetic media. Under his prompting, we spent a lot of time discussing how to cover it without giving it publicity—something that has happened before. https://www.cjr.org/...
Experts have warned for years that women, not politicians, are the overwhelming target of deepfakes. Now their worst nightmare has finally happened: an app that requires no coding skills to make nonconsensual porn videos of women. https://www.technologyreview.com/ ...
