Apple announces a “California Streaming” virtual event on September 14 at 10am PT, where new iPhones and Apple Watches are expected

Apple today announced that it will be holding a special event on Tuesday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m. The event will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater

MacRumors Juli Clover

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple’s September event cadence had already centered on expected iPhone introductions at the Steve Jobs Theater, as shown by the 2019 September iPhone event announcement. “California Streaming” preserves that product-calendar slot while making the presentation virtual.

Later coverage continues the same September pattern, with Apple pairing iPhone and Apple Watch expectations at its 2023 “Wonderlust” event. The immediate significance is not a confirmed product specification, but Apple publicly setting the next launch and marketing checkpoint.

First-order effects

  • Apple gives customers, developers, carriers, and retail partners a fixed September 14 date around which to prepare for the expected iPhone and Apple Watch announcements.
  • A virtual format shifts the event’s launch-day audience from an in-person Steve Jobs Theater gathering to an online presentation controlled by Apple.

Second-order effects

  • Competing handset and wearable makers face a defined Apple marketing window, making the expected iPhone and Apple Watch announcements a focal point for their own launch messaging.
  • Carriers and Apple’s retail channels can align promotions, inventory planning, and customer outreach with the event date before product details are formally announced.

Third-order effects

  • Repeated September iPhone-and-watch events make Apple’s launch calendar a coordination mechanism for the wider mobile-device channel, from retailers to competing brands.
  • If virtual keynotes remain part of Apple’s launch playbook, product-event reach becomes less tied to venue capacity and more tightly managed through Apple’s own digital distribution.

The trend: Apple is reinforcing a repeatable September launch cadence in which a centrally produced digital event coordinates attention around its iPhone and Apple Watch cycle.

The entry level iPad is showing “currently unavailable” and/or shipping delays into October. Apple tells retail employees not to speculate why to consumers. Any guesses why? JK. New ones are coming soon- thinner/faster etc. https://www.bloomberg.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Last year, Apple released the RC build of iOS 14 after the iPhone 12 event, so we can expect the same with iOS 15. So, iOS 15 RC on the 14th & final public release on the 15th.

This looks like the coast off of the Redwoods at night. Here's an idea for the keynote: Tim Cook walks out of the Redwoods, but it is actually a photo taken on the iPhone 13, but the viewer doesn't know it yet. Point is to show the quality of the new cameras. https://twitter.com/…

@LegendaryScoop yes live events have been 90 minutes easily but streamed events have been shorter as there is no dead time and it seems that Federighi speaks faster every time 😊

Would also imagine several different places across California will be featured in the keynote's opening video — So California streaming isn't just a play on California dreaming, but actually a component of the keynote.

So, uhm, how about iOS 15 on Wednesday, September 22? With a proper RC version for a week? ...please? 🥺 *goes back to typing frantically*
