Twitter says it is testing edge-to-edge pictures and videos in tweets on iOS to better support visual and text-based conversations

An Instagram-like focus on visuals  —  Twitter has announced that it's testing edge-to-edge media in tweets on iOS, creating a more full-screen …

The Verge Ian Carlos Campbell

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter had already tested uncropped image previews and 4K uploads on mobile, then made 4K image uploading and viewing available across Android and iOS. The new iOS experiment advances that visual-treatment work from image fidelity to how media occupies the conversation screen.

The later plan for a full-screen video-scrolling interface places this test in a broader redesign of Twitter’s media discovery and viewing surfaces.

First-order effects

  • iOS users included in Twitter’s test see photos and videos use the full width of a tweet, changing the immediate visual balance between media and surrounding text.
  • Twitter gains a live iOS test bed for assessing edge-to-edge media within its core conversation view rather than only through upload-quality changes.

Second-order effects

  • The earlier 4K rollout becomes more consequential when images are displayed with less surrounding interface chrome, increasing the prominence of high-resolution posts in Twitter’s mobile feed.
  • Twitter’s product design shifts toward a more consistent visual language across tweet media and its separate full-screen ad format in Fleets.

Third-order effects

  • Taken together with the later full-screen video-scrolling plan, the pattern points to Twitter treating media presentation and discovery as central parts of the main product rather than secondary tweet attachments.
  • If that direction persists, Twitter’s interface competition will increasingly center on the screen space and navigation allocated to visual posts, alongside text conversations.

The trend: Twitter is progressively redesigning its mobile product around larger, less-cropped and eventually full-screen visual media.

“Image cropping algorithms have been informally shown to have a bias toward white faces, something Twitter confirmed earlier this year. Twitter has attempted to address that problem by eliminating photo cropping, but this design test takes things a step further..” https://twitter…

I've been using this new #Twitter layout on #Android and #iOS since July, it's all a matter of habit, now I think I can't go back to browsing Twitter with the old layout 🙄 https://twitter.com/...
