Facebook says it took action against 12 COVID vaccine misinfo “superspreaders” but disputes claims that those 12 were responsible for 73% of misinfo on Facebook
This is the latest round in a months-long fight over who gets to measure COVID misinformation. In July, Facebook rebutted President Biden's 'killing people' accusation with its own figure of a 50% decline in vaccine hesitancy among US users — a defense of platform-internal metrics — days after reporting that [[a:968654|internal data scientists were denied resources to study COVID misinfo at the start of the pandemic]].
The Center for Countering Digital Hate supplied the outside counter-metric back in March, when it tied a small group of accounts to the bulk of anti-vaccine content; Facebook had already been publicizing volume takedowns like 1.3B fake accounts and 12M pieces of COVID misinformation removed in Q4. Today's move — enforcing against exactly those 12 accounts while rejecting the 73% attribution — shows the company accepting the target list but contesting the research behind it.
First-order effects
The 12 named superspreaders now face concrete enforcement actions — removals or reduced distribution — after months of operating under labeling-only scrutiny.
Facebook is directly attacking CCDH's methodology in public, making the 73%-vs-smaller-share dispute itself the news rather than the enforcement.
Second-order effects
Outside researchers and NGOs gain leverage from the fight: each disputed statistic pushes funders and lawmakers toward independent audit access, which Facebook has so far resisted internally.
Rival platforms face the same CCDH-style naming strategy, forcing them to either pre-empt with their own enforcement lists or defend their measurement claims under the same political pressure.
Third-order effects
If the pattern holds, content-moderation legitimacy shifts from volume metrics (accounts removed, posts labeled) to attribution metrics — who actually drives reach — and whoever controls that methodology controls the policy debate.
A standoff between platform-internal data and civil-society studies, with regulators watching, points toward mandated researcher access to platform data as the durable fix.
The trend: Platform accountability is moving from counting removed content to fighting over whose measurements of harm are authoritative, with political pressure forcing both sides into public methodological combat.

Zuckerberg is on @CBSThisMorning discussing vaccine misinformation on the social platform. We've known for years that @Facebook's racist AI targets Black communities. When will he stop talking and listen? https://twitter.com/...

Incredible. Facebook has the audacity to criticize public interest researchers, rebutting their findings with unsubstantiated claims based on internal data they refuse to share. https://about.fb.com/...

Don't take Facebook's word here. They continue to refuse to disclose the data and banned multiple academic researchers in just the past weeks for investigating misinformation on the platform. https://about.fb.com/...

Looks like @Facebook's Monika Bickert has been asked to go and try and spin Mark Zuckerberg's disastrous interview with @GayleKing. Her statement, however, is completely bananas. Stop the denials, deflections and delay. Please do the right thing and help save lives. https://twitt…
