    In interviews, I've done my best to remain apolitical other than pro-democracy. Democracy should not be a partisan issue; one of my strongest advocates at FB was a former GOP staffer. But for me, the personal was inherently political. This is why I've avoided personal questions.

    Instead, I replaced the screen and opened the door. At 13, I made the cold-eyed calculation that it was better for me to stay and accept the beatings rather than flee into homelessness. My father was not a gentle man. By the time he exhausted himself, I was bruised and bloody.
