Twitter is testing a way to downvote replies on iOS to understand the types of replies users find relevant to a conversation; downvotes won't be public

Last year, Twitter's chief product officer Kayvon Beykpour confirmed that the social network was “exploring” the idea of adding a dislike button to the app.

Some of you on iOS may see different options to up or down vote on replies. We're testing this to understand the types of replies you find relevant in a convo, so we can work on ways to show more of them. Your downvotes aren't public, while your upvotes will be shown as likes. ht…

    HOLY SH— Twitter has added a dislike button!!! @ThisIsNoahEvans @wongmjane @9to5mac https://twitter.com/...

Some key notes about this experiment: 1. This is just a test for research right now. 2. This is not a dislike button. 3. Your downvotes are visible to you only. 4. Votes won't change the order of replies.

    Interesting.

I like that Twitter is testing this out just as YouTube is testing phasing out dislikes which means that nobody knows what the fuck they're doing or what people want. https://twitter.com/...

@TwitterSupport Not only did I design the upvote, I am proud to be the first person on the planet to have been downvoted. May there be many, many more... 😁⬇️

Someone at Twitter periodically gets the brilliant idea “I know! Let's be more like Facebook!”, without understanding that the only thing keeping many of us here is that it isn't Facebook.

I think there's already enough hate on socials to try a dislike button. https://twitter.com/...

Interesting - dislikes are not visible to users but help Twitter “understand” what conversations are valued. Maybe will end up being a way to algorithmically reduce the visibility of bad behavior? Fingers crossed. https://twitter.com/...

I really do not want a dislike button. My twitter space is very positive. I am not ready for randos to drop a “dislike” on my art/work/life/dog pics. https://twitter.com/...

Twitter still doesn't put alt text front & center. Still doesn't offer alt text support in Twitter Media Studio. But you can now have a new way to harass marginalized ppl on Twitter! Image description: screenshot of Twitter TL with thumbs down options. https://twitter.com/...

The Twitter feedback on every new Twitter feature usually seems to be 95% negative. People that already use Twitter want it to stay what it is (w/better moderation) Twitter's platform innovation objectives aren't targeted at existing users, they're trying to bring new users in. h…
