Salesforce and AWS extend their partnership with new integration capabilities to make it easier to share data and build apps on their platforms

The AWS extension is the latest entry in a decade-long Salesforce playbook of stitching its app layer to other platforms through partnership integrations: the 2015 Microsoft pact brought Skype and OneNote hooks, the 2018 Google deal piped Analytics 360 data into Marketing Cloud, and Slack integrations began in 2016 before the acquisition closed. Salesforce also bought that capability outright once, paying $6.5B for MuleSoft and folding it into Salesforce Integration Cloud.

What distinguishes the AWS deal is that the counterparty is infrastructure rather than a fellow app vendor — the integration runs in the opposite direction from the MuleSoft acquisition, with Salesforce meeting customers where their workloads already live on AWS.

First-order effects

  • Joint Salesforce-AWS customers get native data-sharing and app-building paths, reducing the integration work they would otherwise route through middleware like MuleSoft's Integration Cloud.

Second-order effects

  • Microsoft and Google, both prior Salesforce integration partners and AWS competitors, face the same playbook being pointed at their rival's infrastructure — and Microsoft in particular competes on both sides of that line with Dynamics and Azure.
  • Deeper AWS coupling strengthens Salesforce's pull on CRM-adjacent workloads, pressuring the standalone integration middleware layer the MuleSoft acquisition was meant to own.

  • If the pattern holds — app vendors embedding natively in hyperscaler infrastructure rather than building their own — the durable question becomes workload ownership: which layer captures the customer relationship and the data when the app and the infrastructure are this tightly joined.

The trend: Enterprise software alliances are consolidating around hyperscaler infrastructure, with app-layer vendors trading integration depth for distribution on platforms they don't own.
