Facebook rolls out Live Audio Rooms, available to verified public figures and select Groups, and its podcast service, available to select partners, in the US

Sarah Perez / TechCrunch :

TechCrunch Sarah Perez

Context & Ripple Effects

Facebook moved from a limited Taiwan test with public figures and creators to a US rollout that gates Live Audio Rooms to verified public figures and selected Groups, alongside a podcast service for selected partners. The launch follows reports that Facebook was preparing a broader audio-product suite, including podcast discovery tied to Spotify.

The subsequent US Audio hub shows where the separate services were headed: one in-app destination combining podcasts, live rooms, and short-form audio, while Live Audio Rooms expanded globally.

First-order effects

  • Verified public figures and selected Facebook Groups gain access to Live Audio Rooms in the US, while podcast partners receive a new Facebook distribution surface.
  • Facebook adds live and on-demand audio offerings without opening either service to all users or creators at launch.

Second-order effects

  • The selective rollout makes access to Facebook's new audio surfaces a differentiator for approved public figures, Groups, and podcast partners rather than a broadly available publishing tool.
  • Facebook's planned Audio hub gives the company a way to aggregate discovery across podcasts, live rooms, and short-form audio in one product area.

Third-order effects

  • If Facebook continues to expand access in stages, audio publishing on the platform shifts toward a unified audio destination managed through eligibility tiers rather than standalone product launches.
  • The pattern places Facebook's audio strategy within a broader platform model in which distribution is bundled across multiple formats and released first to selected participants.

The trend: Facebook is consolidating live, podcast, and short-form audio into a single discovery layer while using phased access to control who can publish on it.

Today, we're rolling out Live Audio Rooms and podcasts on Facebook: https://about.fb.com/... Public figures and select Facebook Groups in the US can create Live Audio Rooms on iOS, and select podcasts will be available to listeners in the US.

Facebook built a genuinely great feature here, comments in-time while listening to a podcast. Really don't want the Facebook app on my phone again, but if there's high engagement here it may be necessary. https://twitter.com/...

@leongreen No. There are apps for that for video streams, but I imagine the platforms are less keen on making it easy with audio as it's all about direct relationships with creators.

This sounds like a whole lot of stuff that won't affect how I podcast, listen to podcasts or produce podcasts at all and will eventually just go away. Or I'm wrong. Either way. Whatever. https://twitter.com/...

It's official: audio platforms are insanely overhyped right now. But of all the new, would-be Clubhouse competitors, I could not have worse expectations for misinformation, lowest common denominator content, and nefarious uses at scale than I do for Facebook. https://twitter.com/…

Clubhouse didn't catch on momentarily because it's great. It caught on with “the digerati” because there is a small segment of early adopters who are looking for the “next thing” and want to continue filtering beyond the noise. Facebook=late adopters/Microsoft of social media htt…

I haven't seen anybody talk about this yet, but the ability to comment on podcast episodes as they play is a big deal. @joerogan, and his fans, have talked about how much they miss the YouTube comments after he moved to Spotify. Now Facebook is adding that ability to podcasts. ht…

1️⃣ Facebook podcasts are part of FBs larger push into social audio. The strategy is to build a competitor to Discord and Clubhouse that also includes podcasts and audiograms. https://twitter.com/...

Now we just need Amy Schumer and we've got basically Spotify's original podcast launch strategy

@MartinSFP Has anyone worked out a way to go live from one app in all these places yet?

i hate on facebook as much as the next person but the ability to add your podcast to the platform is about to open up the medium to a whole new demographic of listeners. *goes back to impatiently refreshing my email to get the invite* https://twitter.com/...

I don't understand why anyone would bother to release a Clubhouse clone in a post-vaccine world. https://techcrunch.com/...

Facebook's Live #AudioRooms have launched, along with in-app podcast playback. Don't be confused: this isn't about #SocialAudio, it's about the creating sonic real estate for audio ads and venues for creator monetization. https://about.fb.com/... #NewFacebook #CreatorEconomy

Why did it take Facebook so long to clone Clubhouse? a) Too busy cloning other products/features b) Never took Clubhouse seriously c) Facebook Undersight Board warned the company about potential moderation issues d) Mark Zuckerberg is mellowing https://techcrunch.com/...
