Google’s RCS effort began as a carrier-backed replacement for SMS with richer chat features but no end-to-end encryption. After completing RCS availability globally, Google had already said it would begin testing encryption in Messages.

Today’s one-to-one rollout establishes the security layer for Google’s messaging client; later coverage shows the work extending from individual conversations toward group chats and broader RCS activation.

    Any company that truly cares about privacy should adopt RCS and enable encryption to help get everybody off SMS. It's the new standard accepted by carriers and the vast majority of phones. RCS is far from perfect, but no standard is. Adopt it, Apple. https://www.theverge.com/...
