Google makes Workspace and Chat available to all and adds client-side encryption for data on Workspace

That's over three billion potential users  —  Google is announcing some changes to its Workspace suite of apps and services today, including availability for anybody who has a Google account.

The Verge Dieter Bohn

Context & Ripple Effects

Google had already recast G Suite as Workspace, integrating Meet, Chat, and Rooms across its applications in a single collaboration suite. Opening that bundle to every Google account extends the rebrand from an enterprise-product change into a much broader access model.

The encryption addition establishes security as part of that expansion. Later coverage of zero-trust, data-loss prevention, and sovereignty controls shows Google continuing to build enterprise safeguards around Workspace.

First-order effects

  • Google-account holders can now use Workspace and Chat without an organization-managed account, greatly widening the services' potential user base.
  • Workspace customers gain client-side encryption for their data, adding a security control alongside the suite's broader availability.

Second-order effects

  • Google must serve both broadly available accounts and enterprise deployments within the same collaboration products, increasing the importance of controls that distinguish business-grade Workspace.
  • The larger access base gives Google more reason to keep Chat, Meet, and Workspace tightly connected; subsequent Spaces and Gmail-based Meet calling extend that integrated workflow.

Third-order effects

  • If Google sustains this approach, Workspace shifts further from a discrete enterprise suite toward a shared collaboration layer whose reach is broad but whose paid differentiation rests increasingly on security and administration.
  • The combination of open access and stronger controls points to a workplace-software market in which vendors compete on the ability to move users between consumer-scale adoption and governed business use.

The trend: Collaboration suites are broadening access while using security, governance, and integrated workflows to preserve enterprise value.

Happy to share that the fully integrated @GoogleWorkspace experience, including smart canvas that we announced at #GoogleIO, is now available to everyone with a Google account. https://blog.google/...

meanwhile, Google is still selling the vastly inferior Pixelbook Go for these silly prices https://twitter.com/...

Google will let enterprises store their Google Workspace encryption keys, making the data indecipherable to Google. For now keys will be stored by a third-party, but an API will let organizations store their keys on their own servers. https://t.co/6smx8fcHXj

you know what would have gone really great with this Google Workspace / Chat news? an updated and refreshed Pixel Book https://www.theverge.com/...

Okay so Google Workspace and Google Chat are officially available to everybody — but of course the thing I'm noting is that they're finally going to offer a real Progressive Web App for Workspace in September. https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/...
