Facebook taking feedback from critics, and Zuckerberg transparently signing off on a concrete policy change, shows the Board's valuable, if limited, function

Facebook has agreed to follow some of the board's non-binding recommendations regarding the Donald Trump suspension.  That's progress.

I'm disappointed in the Oversight Board's response to Facebook's disappointing responses to the Oversight Board's decision https://twitter.com/...

“We shouldn't have this power” says company that spent 17 years building this power https://about.fb.com/... https://twitter.com/...

I assume what FB said about Trump was “we have a standard now, here are some words about it, we'll figure out how that applies in a couple of years.” Is that it? I'll jinx myself in case that's wrong, but... Was there anything else they could plausibly have said?

Facebook's constant repetition of this line is one of the most mealy-mouthed and pathetic corporate stances I can imagine. Imagine the executives of any other publication whining that it's not fair they have editorial control over what they publish. https://twitter.com/...

@daphnehk I think that's fair and I've been thinking about it too. I think they could have provided examples. They could have explained their previous applications more. They could have described more clearly which way the factors they mention weigh - I'm literally not sure on so…

    1. I have some thoughts on this decision. Fundamentally, I think the whole back and forth between Facebook and the Oversight Board on this is a DISTRACTION from the core issues. Follow along if interested. https://twitter.com/...

@daphnehk Does the fact that there's an election underway make it more or less likely they'll remove something? What does the political structure of the country mean? This feels like random stuff they threw in a list https://twitter.com/...

Facebook has upheld its ban of President Trump for the next two years. Regardless of your politics this should be chilling. We've effectively turned American big tech censorship into our version of China's governmental censorship. https://www.outkick.com/...

    2. Trump is not Facebook's problem. He's a symptom of Facebook's problems. He's been off the site for months but Trump's signature type of content — bigoted, divisive, and false — continues to proliferate The issue is not Trump. It's the algorithm.

Whatever you think of Facebook's policy decisions, it is fascinating to me how much thought appears to go into them & how every decision adds to an enormous web of bylaws that are almost impossible to police at scale effectively https://about.fb.com/...
