Google says it reassigned diversity strategy lead Kamau Bobb to STEM education due to a 2007 post in which he said Jews have an “insatiable appetite for war”

Jennifer Elias / CNBC :

CNBC Jennifer Elias

Context & Ripple Effects

Google’s reassignment follows its prior announcement that it had removed Bobb from the diversity strategy role and Bobb’s apology to Jewish employees. The new placement clarifies that Google is retaining him at the company while moving him out of a role responsible for diversity strategy.

The episode lands against earlier reporting that Google had altered diversity programs while saying it was expanding racial-equity training, making leadership accountability central to how those efforts are received.

First-order effects

  • Kamau Bobb moves to STEM education, ending his responsibility for Google’s diversity strategy after the resurfaced 2007 post.
  • Google must manage its diversity agenda without the leader previously charged with that strategy, while addressing the concerns raised among Jewish employees.

Second-order effects

  • The reassignment draws a sharper operational boundary between Google’s diversity leadership roles and education work, rather than treating an apology as sufficient to restore the prior remit.
  • Google’s handling gives employees a concrete benchmark for how complaints about leaders’ public statements can affect internal assignments.

Third-order effects

  • If companies continue to tie diversity leaders’ mandates to trust across employee communities, reputational scrutiny of past public remarks will become a more direct factor in who can credibly hold those posts.

The trend: Corporate diversity programs are increasingly being judged not only by their stated goals but by whether their leaders retain trust across the employee groups those programs serve.

In an appalling 2007 post, @Google head of diversity Kamau Bobb claimed that Jews have an “insatiable appetite for war” & are insensitive to others who are suffering. Absurd! How did #Google promote someone with such hateful, anti-Semitic views to lead their diversity strategy? h…

All of this begs the question whether (1) @Google did due diligence when selecting @kamaubobb for the sensitive position of global Google DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) Director and (2) whether he should remain in these positions. @Google - what say you?

Shocking comments from @kamaubobb - @Google's head of diversity - writing Jews have an “insatiable appetite for war.” Any Google search on #antisemitism can show that's exactly what Bobb expresses in this blog. An explanation is needed here immediately. https://www.timesofisrael.…
