Via Prime, Fulfillment by Amazon, and its Buy Box algorithm, Amazon forces third party Marketplace sellers to keep prices high for consumers across the web

A new antitrust case shows that Prime inflates prices across the board, using the false promise of ‘free shipping’ that is anything but free.

Any time you hear the word ‘flywheel’ relating to Amazon, replace it with ‘monopoly’ and the sentence will make sense. https://mattstoller.substack.com/ ...

Also, Prime is subsidized by fees paid by third party sellers, which are notoriously inscrutable and liable to go up. Although antitrust discourse rarely centers them these Sellers are also consumers of Amazon's services and arguably more dependent on the company than anyone. htt…

Amazon... Prime example of monopoly power in the 21st century. Lawmakers are now beginning to catch a glimpse of its horrendous price-distorting arrangement. Some might be too ignorant to see it, but in the long run consumers are losing out! https://mattstoller.substack.com/ ...

Very interesting article on Amazon Prime as a vehicle to subsidize Amazon's on line monopoly. Author thinks decent chance of success https://mattstoller.substack.com/ ...

This entire argument only makes sense if you think third-party sellers are the economy. Amazon has no power to “force” Walmart, and Target, and CVS, etc., to charge higher prices. If they were actually “price gouging,” they'd be immediately undercut. https://twitter.com/...

If antitrust enforcers stop Amazon's high price Prime scheme, all the weird ‘free’ stuff the firm pays for and secret sticks on the bill of Prime members - like the MGM acquisition - no longer makes sense. The economics everywhere change. https://mattstoller.substack.com/ ...

Amazon Prime Is an Economy-Distorting Lie https://mattstoller.substack.com/ ... // Narrator: in retail it is common for one channel to only take on (sell) and promote a product with guarantees from a supplier it won't be offered for less elsewhere. 100 years of retailing people s…
