Twitter says users can now join Spaces via desktop and mobile web browsers, but can't host rooms on the web just yet

You can't host rooms yourself on the web just yet, though  —  You'll be able to join Twitter's Clubhouse-like Spaces from desktop and mobile web browsers starting Wednesday …

The Verge Jay Peters

Context & Ripple Effects

Spaces moved from a limited iOS beta to Android participation, then to a broader rollout for accounts with at least 600 followers. Web listening extends the audience side of that rollout without yet making browsers a creation surface.

Twitter’s stated roadmap already included co-hosting, later delivered as rooms with multiple co-host roles. The staged expansion shows Twitter widening access and room-management capacity separately.

First-order effects

  • Desktop and mobile-web visitors can listen to Spaces without using Twitter’s native apps, while prospective hosts still need an app to start a room.
  • Existing Spaces hosts gain a potentially larger listener pool, but browser-based audiences cannot immediately become browser-based hosts.

Second-order effects

  • The split between web listening and app-only hosting keeps the most active creator workflow in Twitter’s native clients while lowering the barrier for casual audience participation.
  • As Twitter opens hosting more broadly, the added web audience makes co-hosting and other planned room-management tools more consequential for organizers handling larger rooms.

Third-order effects

  • If Twitter continues separating low-friction audience access from higher-control hosting tools, live audio products may compete on the breadth of their distribution while retaining creation in managed clients.
  • The rollout points toward live-audio features becoming part of Twitter’s wider platform rather than a limited mobile experiment, with host permissions and moderation roles defining who can run rooms.

The trend: Twitter is scaling Spaces through staged expansion of audience access, host eligibility, and room-management controls.

We have received some questions before whether our Clubhouse rooms can be accessed from desktop. This may be the feature Spaces need to kill off CH. I can now use better mics, and maybe input music too with this https://twitter.com/...
