Tesla says deliveries of Model 3 and Y vehicles in North America will no longer be equipped with radar for Autopilot and instead rely on a camera-based system
New North American Model 3 and Model Y deliveries lose radar hardware for Autopilot, leaving Tesla’s camera-based system responsible for the perception role previously shared with radar.
Tesla must support Autopilot behavior on a sensor configuration that differs from earlier vehicles, making its software stack the immediate point of continuity across the affected fleet.
Second-order effects
Autopilot feature updates, including the navigation and lane-change functions Tesla has been rolling out, become more dependent on camera-and-software performance for new Model 3 and Y owners.
Tesla’s later ultrasonic-sensor removal plan indicates that the radar decision is not an isolated component substitution: the company is reducing reliance on multiple dedicated proximity sensors across its lineup.
Third-order effects
If Tesla maintains this direction, Autopilot development will be organized around a standardized vision-and-software stack rather than feature logic calibrated to a growing mix of sensor hardware.
The pattern shifts the durable differentiation in Tesla’s driver-assistance system toward software validation and updates, while reducing the role of discrete sensing components in new-vehicle configurations.
The trend: Tesla is consolidating Autopilot around camera-led perception and software updates, progressively removing dedicated sensing hardware from new vehicles.
Tesla shipping cars without radar now. Camera vision only. Bold move. I think it's an interesting strategy and may end up being the right play, but shipping cars without hardware before the software is ready is *chef's kiss* based Tesla. https://www.tesla.com/...
I'm not sure whether to read this as a tacit admission that truly self-driving features are never coming, or that Elon Musk and the people behind Autopilot *really* don't care about safety. https://www.theverge.com/...
Car companies have been using Mobileye's EyeQ with only camera no radar for AEB, a vast variety of active safety features and L2 ADAS for years, including various Honda sensing models. OMG Tesla can't even match that without disabling almost everything😬 https://www.tesla.com/...
Hmm, I hope 'we don't need radar' works out better than 'we don't need rain sensors'. New software update can't come soon enough imho, need to finally be rid of the phantom braking! https://www.theverge.com/...
How exactly is 100% vision better than radar in fog and rain? Plus, half the time during inclement weather the cameras warn they can't even see. I hope this decision is based on something grounded in reality and not the hubris of an eccentric entrepreneur. https://www.tesla.com/.…
So imagine: a car company turning on and off features like radar on your car - Tesla is already shipping cars without radar sensors https://www.theverge.com/... #tech #feedly
Tesla is indeed removing radar sensors from Model 3 and Model Y cars, relying on cameras instead. That'll mean some auto navigation limits, but Tesla promises to restore the features. Model X and S (more expensive) will still have radar for now. https://www.tesla.com/...
Why S/X left out? Model 3 and Model Y are our higher volume vehicles. Transitioning them to Tesla Vision first allows us to analyze a large volume of real-world data in a short amount of time, which ultimately speeds up the roll-out of features based on Tesla Vision.
Tesla transitioning to @Tesla Vision! 3/Y delivered May and beyond will not have radar. Short term limitations on AP such as 75mph max speed and higher follow distance. S/X will still have radar until Tesla decides they can remove it from there as well https://www.tesla.com/...
Tesla biomimetic approach to FSD is the ONLY viable autonomous driving platform. First principles thinking.... Humans drive using a computer (brain) and 2 cameras (eyes) NO RADAR Tesla FSD uses a computer and 8 eyes that don't get distracted The storm approaches... https://twitte…
