Facebook built PyTorch into a credible production framework over three years — first with PyTorch 1.0's production-performance overhaul in 2018, then with BoTorch and Ax layered on top in 2019, and decisively when OpenAI chose it over Google's TensorFlow for future projects in early 2020.

Today's move closes the last gap between research adoption and enterprise deployment: by partnering with Microsoft on the PyTorch Enterprise Support Program, Facebook is answering the question every large buyer asks about open source — who do we call when it breaks — and recruiting one of the biggest enterprise software vendors to answer it.
