AMD Q1: revenue of $3.4B, up 93% YoY, net income of $555M, up 243% YoY, with EPYC sales driving Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom revenue up 286% to $1.35B

Context & Ripple Effects

AMD entered Q1 after its enterprise, embedded and semi-custom business had already accelerated in Q4, when the segment grew 176% year over year. Q1 extends that trajectory, with EPYC identified as the driver of an even faster 286% increase in the segment.

The subsequent quarterly coverage shows that enterprise, embedded and semi-custom revenue remained a major AMD growth engine through Q2's 183% year-over-year increase and into Q3, framing Q1 as part of a sustained server-led expansion rather than an isolated quarter.

First-order effects

  • AMD's $555M net income and 93% revenue growth give it materially greater financial capacity while EPYC sales lift its Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom revenue to $1.35B.
  • EPYC becomes the named growth driver inside AMD's enterprise-facing business, concentrating attention on server-chip execution rather than only its Computing and Graphics products.

Second-order effects

  • AMD's continued enterprise-segment acceleration raises the competitive bar for server-chip suppliers, as customers have a faster-growing alternative to evaluate for enterprise and embedded deployments.
  • The segment's momentum makes AMD's revenue mix more dependent on maintaining EPYC demand; later Q3 enterprise-segment growth indicates that this business remained central to the company's expansion.

Third-order effects

  • The sequence of quarterly results points to AMD building a more durable enterprise and data-center revenue pillar alongside its traditional computing and graphics businesses, provided EPYC-led demand persists.
  • As enterprise revenue becomes a larger strategic focus, AMD's competitive position will be increasingly judged by sustained server-business growth rather than headline companywide revenue alone.

The trend: AMD's growth story is shifting toward an enterprise and server-chip business in which EPYC demand is a primary determinant of quarterly momentum.

Looks like my tweet was eaten: AMD's Computing and Graphics segment revenue is $2.10 billion, up 46% on Ryzen and Radeon sales growth. Processor, GPU ASPs are up. Semi-custom segment revenue was $1.35B, up 286%, on strong Epyc revenue but lower semi-custom sales.

$AMD Q2 2021 Forecast ➡ Rev $3.6B (+86% YoY) ➡ GM 47% (was 46% Q1) ➡ OpEx $900m ➡ 15% tax rate No serious launches expected, just pickup of high demand and growth in units/ASPs. Market share is a question as always https://twitter.com/...

Question to ask AMD: How are EPYC ASPs? State of silicon production post-TSMC Market Share potential in various markets? Does TAM matter if there isn't enough silicon to address demand Is 46% GM the limit? Predicted direction of GM post Xilinx? AMD's sub $300 CPU/GPU Market

As I said, #AMD just killed it. massive revenue gain, massive ASP gains, and everything #Intel wasn't. No indigestion either for some reason, or slimy infographics, just solid performance without laughable excuses. Refreshing. Called it.

AMD's Su: Epyc server sales more than doubled year over year. Yikes.

AMD's cash reserves are now $3.1B. I know no one cares about that, but that's far better than the lean years in 2013/4 when they were selling their Austin HQ and leasing it back. (Cash reserves were about $1B then.)
