Volvo is running the same playbook it used with Uber: back in 2017 it agreed to supply up to 24,000 autonomous-ready SUVs to Uber in a deliberately non-exclusive deal, then unveiled an XC90-based fully autonomous car for that program in 2019. Now it is extending the model to Didi, with hundreds of driverless-equipped SUVs integrated directly into Didi's own self-driving hardware platform.

The demand side has been building since Didi received permits for a safety-driver robo-taxi service in Shanghai in 2019, with stated plans to expand to more Chinese cities. What makes this deal notable is who owns the autonomy stack: unlike Uber, which layered its tech onto Volvo vehicles, Didi supplies the hardware platform itself — Volvo is becoming the chassis vendor inside a customer-designed system.

  • Didi gets the vehicle volume to scale the robo-taxi service it was first permitted to run in Shanghai, while Volvo books a second major ride-hailing customer for its driverless-capable SUVs alongside Uber.
