Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency that started out as a joke in 2013, now has a market cap of $40B+ after growing nearly 400%+ in the past seven days

- Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency based on the “Doge” meme, which rose to popularity in late 2013.  It started out as a joke.

CNBC Ryan Browne

Context & Ripple Effects

Dogecoin had already shown a prior boom-and-bust-style valuation pattern: its creator described the 2018 $1B valuation surge as broader market excess despite limited development. In early 2021, tweets from Elon Musk accompanied another sharp rise, putting the token back at the center of retail-crypto attention.

The current valuation jump is therefore more than a one-day meme cycle: it extends a recurring pattern in which Dogecoin’s cultural visibility, rather than reported protocol changes, drives coverage and market interest.

First-order effects

  • Dogecoin’s rapid appreciation lifts the market value of existing holders’ tokens and makes the meme-based asset materially more prominent in the cryptocurrency market.

Second-order effects

  • Social-media attention becomes a more consequential channel for Dogecoin price discovery: the related coverage ties its earlier advance to Musk’s tweets and its subsequent move to the #DogeDay campaign.

Third-order effects

  • Repeated valuation spikes without corresponding reported development activity point to a crypto market segment where cultural reach can temporarily outweigh product progress in setting prices.

The trend: Dogecoin is a data point in the growing influence of online communities and celebrity attention over the valuation of consumer-facing crypto assets.

Dogecoin is a case study on meme as a moat. If something can be meme'd then it can also acquire customers at scale and thus become really large and valuable over time. Bet on memes

I'll say another simple truth: If the world decides Dogecoin is what should be the most valuable, then they can make it so. The price is fully set by the market. It doesn't matter how many bells and whistles other cryptocurrencies have. All that matters is buying and selling.

I was wrong to be skeptical of Dogecoin. I have taken the time and done the work. I have gone very deep. And now I believe it is already clearly reducing inequality, democratizing wealth creation and holding governments accountable. I know this because of the proof in the price.

Called mom. Told her I was able to fully pay off her home equity loan. Lots of tears. That was such a weight, for so long. One step closer to feeling like she can live independently. This is all thanks to you guys. I don't even know what to say, it's beyond words. Thank you. http…

Dogecoin gets a lot of hate but I'd still say it has more practical utility than Walgreens reward points

When cryptocurrency has no actual real world value beyond the feverish collective delusion that lurks inside cryptobros heads, can it actually ever have a “bubble”? The entire value is the delusion. The bubble IS the value.

    If you invested $1000 into the following on January 1, 2021, you'd have this much as of April 16: - Tesla: $1,012 - GameStop: $9,060 - Bitcoin $2,150 - #Dogecoin: $55,550!!! https://twitter.com/...
