“Even though I'm a pro-crypto, pro-Bitcoin maximalist person, I do wonder whether if at this point Bitcoin should also be thought of in part as a Chinese financial weapon against the U.S.” says @Paypal co-founder Peter Thiel. More on cryptocurrencies from The #NixonSeminar: https…

What Peter actually said, jokingly, is that the *EURO* and Bitcoin can be considered “Chinese weapons against the dollar” as they may be alternate reserve currencies. Obvious rhetorical overstatement, meant to poke the US for complacency on innovation. https://nixonseminar.com/..…
  • @qwqiao Qiao Wang on x
Remember Thiel wrote 0 to 1 and is a huge fan of the mimetic theory. The best way to convince someone to do something is to tell them their biggest competitor is already doing that thing.
  • @thestalwart Joe Weisenthal on x
Wow. Peter Thiel says Bitcoin is a Chinese weapon and that the US needs to crack down on it harder https://www.bloomberg.com/... scoop from @chafkin

Regarding Thiel and Bitcoin: Read the transcript when it comes out, not the third party account by clickbait merchants. You might still disagree, but at least you'll read the primary source. https://twitter.com/...

My take on this: Peter Thiel is not saying that BTC should be banned or restricted, but he is actually indirectly pushing the US to adopt it more quickly. If not the US will fall behind even more and the dollar is doomed anyway. IMHO this is very bullish for BTC. https://twitter.…
  • @ansellindner Ansel Lindner on x
The US should view #bitcoin, not as a threat, but as a way out of the liquidity trap. No one wants the burden of the reserve currency. With bitcoin, everyone shares the burden. https://twitter.com/...
  • @nic__carter Nic Carter on x
I think it's some kind of law that if I found your work inspirational and informative from 2015-20, you come out against Bitcoin
  • @jshieber Jon Shieber on x
The play here seems to be to push the USG into being more open to adopting Bitcoin-friendly policies so that the “weapon” becomes useless.... and FF pockets billions. Greed and capitalism know no borders. (Esp. ironic coming from a New Zealand resident) https://www.theguardian.co…

Peter Thiel is the same man who invested in EOS and Block One and made out like a bandit and now is selling Bitcoin up the river. Absolutely shameful. https://twitter.com/...
  • @stephendpalley Palley on x
This doesn't mean Thiel is against Bitcoin. It means he is intelligent enough to be able to hold more than one thought in his head at a time, and has more of an appreciation for nuance than a whole bunch of you lot. https://twitter.com/...
  • @libertyblitz Michael Krieger on x
Even now I have bitcoiners rushing to defend Peter Thiel. Why would you give the founder of Palantir the benefit of the doubt?

if you think thiel is anti bitcoin boy do i have an NFT to sell you
  • @nic__carter Nic Carter on x
@EricRWeinstein I didn't claim he hates it. But his comments are off-base. Bitcoin is extremely positive to the US, extremely negative for the CCP (which relies on capital controls).
  • @vinncent Vincent Bevins on x
It is actually pretty funny that most of the people that want to use Bitcoin to undermine the dollar are dudes in the US whose entire suburban lives have been financed by imperial rents and the exorbitant privilege https://www.bloomberg.com/...
  • @nic__carter Nic Carter on x
@loomdart it's not an attack on the USD at all, it vastly increases the USDs reach. it's an attack on the militants at the treasury that think they have a divine right to control capital flows globally

The natual conclusion is to create powerful strong laws insuring #bitcoin's success in the USA. THis is the equivalent of the Sputnik moment, where the USA proves it won't let any nation beat it. #bitcoin is great for the USA and Freedom. https://twitter.com/...

See the actual verbatim quote on my link below. The point Peter is illustrating is the advantage any government has that has invested in #Bitcoin as at least a partial reserve, like gold. Not a government not owning Bitcoin will devalue their currency. https://twitter.com/... htt…

The only threat to the USD as a reserve currency is the US itself. Rampant money printing, sitting Presidents inciting riots, and questionable foreign policy make the USD unsuitable as a reserve. Bitcoin can't threaten the USD anymore than Gold can. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

@nic__carter “He described himself as pro crypto, pro bitcoin maximalist, but warned that it “threatens the us dollar”. That doesn't sound like he hates bitcoin, but that he is worried it could literally be used in financial warfare.

This is absurd. Peter Thiel does not hate Bitcoin. True, I've never found a shrine to BTC in his home. He has never written a song or prayer to Bitcoin. And I have never seen him lovingly polishing a physical Bitcoin. But for gosh sakes, enough with the insane misrepresentation. …

@nic__carter fwiw his statement *kind of* makes sense, as in btc is seen as a direct attack on the USD (for the time being anyways) as a “money printing” hedge

  • @nic__carter Nic Carter on x
@smack_stock Bitcoin doesn't remotely threaten the dollar, it threatens the beltway elite that rely lazily on sanctions for power projection. It also threatens the Yuan, a managed currency. Thiel needs to level up

Easy counter to this weapon- Bitcoin transaction initiators have an option to set a note for each transaction. So, initiate a ton of small btc transactions with text containing the phrase: “What happened June 5, 1989 in Tiananmen Square?” China's blockchain nodes might not like. …

All I know is that if the Fed buys BTC it'll go to a million, Thiel is deep in BTC, and he'd probably be right if he thought there was a non-zero chance he could scare the government into doing something good for him with the specter of Chinese supremacy. 10D chess, baby. https:/…

Bitcoin is a Chinese financial weapon the same way that gunpowder is a Chinese military weapon. Every country uses gunpowder and every country will use Bitcoin. And just like nuclear war, fiat money is a strange game. The only winning move is not to play. https://twitter.com/...
  • @heerjeet Jeet Heer on x
So Thiel is saying he's pro-Bitcoin and Bitcoin is also a Chinese financial weapon to undermine American global hegemony, which means Thiel is pro-China & anti-American? Have I got that right? https://twitter.com/...
