Microsoft says the HoloLens deal with the U.S. Army is now worth as much as $21.9 billion over 10 years. Army confirms the deal is moving forward into production. One interesting thing: Microsoft will manufacture the devices in the U.S.: https://www.bloomberg.com/...

And just like that, the R&D costs for this product have been more than recovered. https://twitter.com/...

People often ask about the validity of augmented reality, and the companies that are driving the #AR and #XR space. This deal with @Microsoft and @USArmy represents a great application for this technology. Also, seemed to drive a nice pop in $MSFT today. https://blogs.microsoft.c…

Media HoloLens: “is best suited to professional business applications”, “enables collaboration among surgeons worldwide”, “will be used to teach (bio)medical students about the anatomy of the ankle”, etc. Where is actually used: https://blogs.microsoft.com/ ...

For two centuries, technology has been changing the nature of what is needed to defend a nation. We are longtime supporters of the @DeptofDefense and @USArmy's effort to modernize the U.S. Military through advanced technology. https://blogs.microsoft.com/ ...

Step one in building a fully functional HUD for combat operations. This is probably using BFTs and some comm. Hopefully we see some health integrations where we can track troops vitals during ops https://twitter.com/...

@TheRichWoods I think there will be once the headwear bit works out. Apple can leverage iPhone, Watch, AirPods as a piecemeal wearable computer with only the lenses missing. Lots of potential for that setup that really no one else can touch.

Wow. That price tag is two JEDIs! https://twitter.com/...

Microsoft is helping the USG turn war into a video game. One of the reasons we are banning face surveillance is that we know military technologies end up in police hands. We do not accept living in that kind of world, and we are organizing so we won't. https://twitter.com/...

Big news in the world of AR. I do hope they deliver a lot more than 120k headsets at that price. https://techcrunch.com/...

One of the interesting things about big tech is how different the cultures are. At Google, operating in China or building tech for the U.S. military resulted in significant employee protests. At Microsoft (or Apple), these are just another Tuesday. https://techcrunch.com/...

Apple will likely nail consumer AR, but for the rest of the working world, Microsoft has a massive headstart already.
  • @therichwoods Rich Woods on x
@Daniel_Rubino That's assuming that there's a market for consumer AR. There's a reason that Microsoft isn't aiming for that.
  • @dinabass Dina Bass on x
As we've covered previously, some Microsoft employees are not happy about the use of the company's tech for this use case.

People keep talking about Apple and AR, but as I've said in the past: 1. Microsoft is the only company with AR out in the field being used right now e.g. schools, operating rooms, factories 2. It's the only AR system actually making real money today Case in point ... https://twit…

if JEDI sounded like a big win for Microsoft, then Microsoft's new contract to make modified HoloLens for the US Army could be twice as big. it's worth up to $21.9 billion over 10 years https://www.cnbc.com/...
