Context & Ripple Effects

At the peak of the Clubhouse-fueled live-audio boom, Spotify moved to buy its way into social conversation rather than build it, paying €57M for Betty Labs and its sports-focused talk app Locker Room. The plan was to expand Locker Room into a broader live platform under Spotify's brand.

The arc that followed is now visible in the coverage: Spotify relaunched the app as Greenroom within months, folded it into the main app as Spotify Live after a rebrand in early 2022, and ultimately shut Spotify Live down in April 2023. This acquisition is therefore best read as the opening move of a live-audio experiment that ran its course in two years.

First-order effects

  • Betty Labs' team and Locker Room's product became Spotify property overnight, giving Spotify a working live-audio app and a sports-community user base it did not have to grow from zero.
  • Clubhouse, whose format Locker Room cloned, immediately faced a deep-pocketed competitor with a music-and-podcast audience attached.

Second-order effects

  • Spotify converted the acquisition into a pipeline for its core business — Greenroom let users turn live rooms into podcasts, tying ephemeral conversation back to Spotify's catalog economics.
  • The move pressured rivals like Twitter and Facebook, both already racing to ship their own live-audio features, to keep matching feature-for-feature during the format's hype cycle.

Third-order effects

  • The eventual shutdown of Spotify Live points to a structural lesson: acquired social formats that lack standalone engagement get absorbed and retired rather than sustained, making 'buy the trend' a recurring pattern in platform strategy.
  • If the pattern holds, live social audio consolidates around whoever owns distribution — standalone apps like Clubhouse compete against features embedded in existing platforms, not against other startups.

The trend: Live social audio has shifted from a startup-led gold rush into a feature inside incumbent platforms, with acquirers like Spotify retiring the standalone experiments once engagement failed to justify them.

The social audio play also means Spotify podcasters like Joe Rogan and Bill Simmons could soon broadcast in real time, rather than on delay, while musicians might one day be able to broadcast their concerts or other recordings live to listeners. https://www.nbcnews.com/...

It's kind of wild to me that we basically killed off radio for about a decade because the app and phone makers couldn't be bothered to figure out how to offer live audio broadcasts. And now they've reinvented the wheel, to much fanfare. https://twitter.com/...

Spotify to acquire sports-focused live audio app Locker Room. Expanding beyond sports, tapping into Spotify's algorithm, and tieing into its ad network are all directions we'll likely see this expand. https://www.theverge.com/...
