Verkada security camera hacker has been charged in the US for hacking into 100+ of the world's biggest companies since 2019 and leaking proprietary data online

The US Department of Justice has charged today a Swiss national for hacking into more than 100 companies and leaking proprietary data online on their personal website.

The Record Catalin Cimpanu

Context & Ripple Effects

The DOJ charge extends a related enforcement record spanning alleged theft of corporate data and IP, including the case alleging long-running theft from organizations in 11 countries. Earlier coverage also connected hacked nonpublic corporate information to securities trading, from an alleged SEC database intrusion to stolen newswire releases used by a criminal network.

First-order effects

  • The Swiss national now faces a U.S. criminal case, while the more than 100 affected companies must assess the exposure created by proprietary data published online.

Second-order effects

  • Public dissemination raises the burden on affected companies beyond closing an intrusion: they must determine what proprietary material was exposed and manage its continuing availability.

Third-order effects

  • Taken with DOJ cases involving IP theft and market-sensitive corporate information, the charge points to cyber enforcement treating stolen business data as an asset whose misuse can create harms beyond the initial breach.

The trend: U.S. cybercrime enforcement is increasingly connecting large-scale corporate-data intrusions with the downstream use and publication of the stolen information.

Verkada security camera ‘hacktivist’ Till Kottman has now been raided and subsequently indicted by the US for multiple alleged hacking offences since 2019. What will this case mean for ‘white hack hackers’ and whistle blowers? https://www.justice.gov/...
