Sources: Nintendo plans to unveil a new Switch model in 2021 that will come with 7-inch 720p Samsung OLED display, and support 4K graphics when docked with TVs

- Samsung Display will start production of 7-inch panels in June  — Gaming giant aims to propel Switch against the Xbox and PS5

Bloomberg

Context & Ripple Effects

Nintendo had already been linked to a 2021 upgrade with more computing power and possible 4K output in an earlier report on a more powerful Switch. This report adds the display supplier and panel specification, tying Nintendo's refresh plan to Samsung Display production.

Later coverage showed the display portion of the plan materialized in Nintendo's 7-inch OLED Switch update, while the eventual successor expanded the docked-4K and screen upgrades in the Switch 2 specification reveal.

First-order effects

  • Samsung Display is positioned to begin producing 7-inch OLED panels for Nintendo's planned 2021 hardware refresh, creating a new console-panel supply commitment.
  • Nintendo's planned model would improve the handheld screen while adding 4K output in docked use, sharpening the Switch's television-facing comparison with Xbox and PS5.

Second-order effects

  • Xbox and PS5 face a Switch that narrows the visible gap in living-room output without abandoning Nintendo's handheld format, making display quality and docked performance more central comparison points.
  • Samsung gains a route for OLED panel volume in gaming hardware, while Nintendo takes on the cost and supply-management implications of moving its console screen to OLED.

Third-order effects

  • The sequence from earlier upgrade reports to OLED and later Switch 2 specifications points to Nintendo using staged hardware revisions to extend the Switch platform rather than treating handheld and TV-console capabilities as separate product categories.
  • If this pattern persists, console differentiation will increasingly pair portable-device displays with docked performance, making component roadmaps from suppliers such as Samsung more relevant to refresh timing.

The trend: Nintendo's Switch roadmap is moving toward iterative portable-console upgrades that combine premium displays with progressively stronger docked-TV capabilities.

720p was already not great for 2017, for 2021 it's borderline bad, especially for 7 inches. It really should have been upgraded to 1080p. Also, while OLED screens got great colors in comparison to LCD ones, burn-in is a real possibility so idk what to think of all this https://tw…

This sounds awesome but I don't expect to see a “Switch Pro” until Holiday 2021 at the earliest. Early 2022 seems safe though with Breath of the Wild 2 and Pokemon Legends: Arceus on the horizon. Can't wait to find out from Nintendo themselves! https://twitter.com/...

Only rumors at this stage, but if Samsung has excess OLED production capacity it makes sense that Nintendo would consider using those for a slightly upgraded Switch (while keeping all else essentially the same amid the ongoing global semiconductor shortage). https://twitter.com/.…

Bloomberg: New Switch model to begin production in June with 720p OLED display in handheld and 4k output in docked. Yet another console that will be impossible to get this year 😆 https://www.bloomberg.com/... #Nintendo #SwitchPro https://twitter.com/...

A Switch Pro makes a lot of sense and if current games run better I'll be happy... but please nintendo don't release a Switch 2 like a year later or something... https://twitter.com/...

OLED screens are amazing. The original Vita screen was OLED and still stands out. Switch getting one will make playing games on it that much better. https://twitter.com/...

Bloomberg reports that a new Nintendo Switch model will have a 7-inch Samsung OLED 720p display with plans to unveil later this year. Displays in mass production starting June with initial monthly target of just under 1 million units https://www.bloomberg.com/...
