Robinhood says it has added 6M new crypto customers so far in 2021; Robinhood averaged ~200K new crypto customers a month in 2020

Since we launched nearly three years ago, Robinhood Crypto has been central to our efforts to expand access to financial services and democratize finance for all.

Robinhood

Context & Ripple Effects

Robinhood’s reported customer-acquisition pace marks a sharp break from its 2020 monthly average. The subsequent jump to 9.5 million crypto traders in Q1 2021 shows that the early surge translated into unusually broad platform activity.

The later coverage also frames crypto as a material but cyclical revenue line: Robinhood reported $233 million in crypto revenue in Q2 2021, while crypto trading revenue fell year over year in Q1 2023 before rebounding in 2024.

First-order effects

  • Robinhood immediately expands the addressable base for Robinhood Crypto, turning crypto from a small add-on into a service used by millions of newly acquired customers.
  • The influx gives Robinhood a larger pool of customers able to generate crypto transaction activity alongside its core brokerage offering.

Second-order effects

  • Robinhood’s revenue mix becomes more exposed to crypto trading demand: the following quarter’s $233 million in crypto revenue demonstrates how quickly customer activity can become financially significant.
  • The contrast between the 2023 crypto-revenue decline and the later transaction-revenue rebound makes retaining and reactivating this customer base as important as acquiring it.

Third-order effects

  • Robinhood’s experience points to retail brokerages competing for crypto users through distribution and account access, with trading revenue increasingly tied to swings in customer engagement.
  • If crypto participation continues to move in bursts, platform economics will favor firms that can absorb volatile transaction revenue within broader brokerage businesses.

The trend: Retail investing platforms are using crypto access to acquire customers quickly, while their revenue models become more sensitive to crypto trading cycles.

Ugh. That's 6 million more unsuspecting people who don't realize that Robinhood doesn't let you transfer assets out without converting to cash and creating a taxable event. 😬 https://twitter.com/...
