TikTok's networks effects, largely driven by remixability of content and features that interconnect, cannot be easily cloned by rivals to recreate the ecosystem

I promised one final piece on TikTok, focused primarily on the network effects of creativity.  And this is that, in part. Tweets: @eugenewei , @sarthakgh , @joshelman , @johnbattelle , @patrick_oshag , @ruima , @juliey4 , @arctictony , @amyjokim , @mitali , @eugenewei , and @sriramk Tweets: Eugene Wei / @eugenewei : Finally published my long-overdue third piece on TikTok, “American Idle.” It's about the network effects of creativity, as promised, but also includes a bunch of other thoughts on TikTok as a product and an experience. https://www.eugenewei.com/... Sar Haribhakti / @sarthakgh : Really wild how popular Youtube is despite not having launched any creation tools Demand + monetization have won it for them. 30 billion in revenue for YT creators in just past 3 years https://twitter.com/... @joshelman : An absolute masterclass in Tiktok. Written in the style of the FYP. Stayed in bed too long this AM reading through. Come for the analysis, stay for the spectacular insights like “It's circular, an ouroboros of virality.” “Tiktok is entertainment Cheetos.” https://twitter.com/... John Battelle / @johnbattelle : Always read every word of an @eugenewei post. “Inherent to digital culture is the remix.” https://twitter.com/... Patrick OShaughnessy / @patrick_oshag : Eugene always delivers something detailed and thought provoking. Learned a lot here. https://twitter.com/... @ruima : “TikTok is a form of assisted evolution in which humans and machine learning algorithms accelerate memetic evolution” 😂 https://twitter.com/... Julie Young / @juliey4 : latest @eugenewei is excellent “people share TikToks on YT, Twitter, IG - but those apps receive flattened video files and can't break them into component parts to be remixed the way you can on TikTok... the creativity happens on TikTok.” https://tinyurl.com/... Tony Haile / @arctictony : The expense in reading @eugenewei isn't the time. It's all the books he references that I immediately buy: https://www.eugenewei.com/... @amyjokim : “TikTok's Duet feature belongs in the social media hall of fame of primitives alongside features like Follow & Like” Couldn't agree more - insightful essay https://www.eugenewei.com/... Mitali Pattnaik / @mitali : “By network effects of creativity, I mean that every additional user on TikTok makes every other user more creative” <- this is exactly how Burning Man works btw https://twitter.com/... Eugene Wei / @eugenewei : I experimented with a new form. Like the TikTok FYP feed, this piece is a series of short pieces arranged in a vertical feed. You can skip to the next section if bored or read them in random order. Those who find long essays too daunting may find this more digestible. Sriram Krishnan / @sriramk : This is a magnum opus, up there with @eugenewei's “Status as a Service” https://twitter.com/...

Remains of the Day Eugene Wei

Context & Ripple Effects

This closes Eugene Wei's TikTok trilogy, and it leans on his own earlier framework from Status as a Service: where that piece argued social platforms mint status through scarce proof-of-work, this one argues TikTok's proof-of-work is remixable video plus interconnecting features like Duet — a supply side of creativity that competitors cannot lift wholesale. The claim matters because it sets up a testable prediction about what rival platforms would actually do next.

The related coverage reads as that prediction playing out: within roughly a year and a half, an internal Meta memo laid out plans to rebuild Facebook around TikTok-style recommendations of unconnected posts, while later analysis found both Instagram and TikTok themselves degrading under the "Bootleg Ratio", as clout-chasing cross-posted accounts crowd out native creative work.

First-order effects

  • Rivals' clone-the-feature playbook fails on its own terms: Meta's subsequent internal plan to make Facebook more like TikTok — including pulling Messenger back into the app and recommending unconnected posts — copies surface mechanics, not the remixability loop Wei identifies as the actual moat.

Second-order effects

  • Platforms that import the format without the creative tooling inherit the format's failure mode: the Bootleg Ratio dynamic, where clout-chasing accounts porting content between apps dilute feed quality for Instagram and eventually TikTok itself.

Third-order effects

  • If creative network effects are the durable moat, competition shifts decisively from feature parity to the supply side — creator tools and the retention-optimizing recommendation engine detailed in TikTok's Beijing engineering document become the assets worth defending, and regulation of those algorithms becomes the lever regulators reach for.

The trend: Social platform competition is moving from cloning features to owning the creative supply chain — remixable formats, creator tooling, and retention-tuned recommendation — with feed-quality decay as the recurring tax on every imitation.
