According to an estimate Apple Watch reached 100M users in December, 30M of which came in 2020; 35% of US iPhone users wear an Apple Watch

More than 100 million people wear an Apple Watch.  Based on my estimates, Apple surpassed the important adoption milestone this past December.

Context & Ripple Effects

An October estimate had already put Apple Watch near the 100 million-user threshold and estimated that 35% of U.S. iPhone users wore one; this report frames December as the point at which that installed base crossed the line. A later market report likewise recorded a 100 million-plus Apple Watch active user base, reinforcing the significance of the milestone.

The earlier coverage also characterized rivals as lacking a credible competing device, while the broader smartwatch market was growing and the sub-$100 segment was expanding rapidly. Apple’s reported user base therefore matters as both an ecosystem foothold and a contrast with volume growth at lower price points.

First-order effects

  • Apple enters 2021 with an estimated 100 million-plus Watch user base, giving the company a substantially larger installed audience within its iPhone customer base.
  • Wearable rivals face a higher bar to challenge Apple in the U.S., where the prior estimate put Watch adoption at 35% of iPhone users.

Second-order effects

  • The reported 30 million users added in 2020 raises the competitive importance of retaining existing users, not merely winning new smartwatch buyers, for Apple and its rivals.
  • Rapid growth in the sub-$100 smartwatch segment creates a parallel volume market that can expand the category without directly matching Apple Watch’s iPhone-user penetration.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple’s installed-base lead persists while low-cost devices drive unit growth, smartwatches are likely to separate into an Apple-centered iPhone accessory market and a broader price-led wearables market.
  • The comparison with the earlier near-100 million estimate suggests that installed-user base, rather than quarterly shipments alone, is becoming the key measure of smartwatch competitive position.

The trend: Smartwatch competition is shifting toward installed-base scale and ecosystem attachment, even as lower-priced devices broaden the overall market.

Apple Watch Is Now Worn on 100 Million Wrists https://www.aboveavalon.com/ ... The Apple Watch has already helped usher in a new paradigm shift in computing, and Apple is still only getting started with what is possible on the wrist.
