A skeptical look at Clubhouse, where most conversations are boring and whose audio-centric, synchronous content may be far less compelling after the pandemic
Days after Clubhouse's a16z-led Series B — a round with 180+ investors and creator-payment plans on the roadmap — Mark Stenberg's Medialyte piece supplies the bear case: most rooms are boring, and a format built on synchronous, unrecorded audio is a lockdown artifact. TechCrunch had already framed Clubhouse among the spontaneous social apps that boomed under lockdowns, which is precisely the condition Stenberg says won't last.
Clubhouse's retention story — the core justification for the a16z round — now has a published counterweight, forcing the company to prove live rooms hold users once lockdown habits fade.
Creators deciding where to invest live-audio time face a sharpened question: whether Clubhouse's audience is a pandemic spike or a durable base.
Second-order effects
If the product is as easily copied as critics argue, the moat question pushes Clubhouse toward the monetization and virality features Twitch, Snapchat, and Discord already have — the creator-payment tests promised at the Series B become urgent rather than exploratory.
Rivals in social audio can compete on the exact axis Stenberg flags — recorded, asynchronous, discoverable content — rather than cloning the live-room format outright.
Third-order effects
If the pattern holds, synchronous audio rooms prove to be pandemic-native rather than structural, and the category migrates toward asynchronous voice — a path Clubhouse itself later took with its 'Chats' redesign and, ultimately, deep staff cuts.
The episode becomes a template for evaluating lockdown-era social apps: engagement earned under stay-at-home conditions gets discounted until it survives reopening.
The trend: Pandemic-native synchronous social apps face a retention reckoning as lockdown habits fade, pushing the category toward asynchronous formats and monetization mechanics borrowed from established platforms.
I've been podcasting/live broadcasting for a long time, but I still find using Clubhouse stressful for all the reasons in this article. Specifically: -It is totally unpredictable when you'll be called upon -Zero written/visual feedback from the audience https://medialyte.substack…
@Techmeme @MarkStenberg3 100% agree. Working on something at the intersection of social + audio addressing these fundamental flaws. https://trypersona.com/ is a social audio space built around questions w/ friends + experts, via 30 sec answers. Would love to hear people's feedbac…
Clubhouse reminds me of Meerkat/Periscope in that the experience is unique but I can't see people found this regularly once the novelty wears off. Impromptu conference calls isn't what we'd spend our time doing if not for a global pandemic.
I think there's an important opportunity to be the Peloton of podcasts. You can have interactive shows at a particular time slot but people can catch it later on demand. The fact I can't listen to @sriramk's shows with @finkd and @elonmusk after the fact is a bug not a feature.
Great post that echoes a few of the thoughts I've had recently. I keep seeing @Meetup whenever I open the app, not the ephemeral, multi-directional podcasting platform I think they want to be. Still early though. https://twitter.com/...
Absolutely loved this analysis, I agree with all of it, fascinating to watch develop but unlikely for me : Portrait of a Clubhouse skeptic by @MarkStenberg3 https://medialyte.substack.com/ ...

for once in my life i finally feel UNgaslit by an analysis of Clubhouse Thanks @MarkStenberg3 for this piece & for shooting at linkedin too: “Clubhouse has not yet devolved into an audio version of the most hellish social media on the planet...” https://medialyte.substack.com/ ..…
Interesting read. “In many ways, Clubhouse is the anti-Quibi: Where one counted on normal life and flopped in quarantine, the other is killing in quarantine but poised to flop in normal life.” https://twitter.com/...
I've received a few invites to join Clubhouse, and I suppose as a media industry journalist I'll eventually need to try it out, but it just sounds like such an exhausting platform to participate in, and there are only so many hours in the day. https://medialyte.substack.com/ ...
