hello, here is some news Facebook is building a newsletter product, designed to court independent writers and journalists it could be similar to offerings from startups like Substack and Revue https://www.nytimes.com/...

As a journalist who has worked for almost 10 years at digital media companies, let me sarcastically say that I can't wait to use a Facebook product do journalism. https://twitter.com/...
  • @lollardfish David M. Perry on x
One of my reaction other than fury is that many of us used writer pages this way and then Facebook changed the system so that if you didn't pay to promote a post only like 10% of your audience saw it. https://twitter.com/...

still manages to impress that the hot technology every major tech company *must* replicate in the 2020s is an email newsletter https://twitter.com/...

I fought tooth and nail 5 years ago to get FB to invest in writers. I was the only PM who believed text is not dead. They told me “we're just an ingestion engine for content” and your product (Facebook Notes) is too niche to get funding. Wow, how the tables have turned 🙃 https://…

Last time Facebook did this a lot of journalists lost their jobs. Remember “pivot to video” ? https://www.theatlantic.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...

Facebook really just can't help itself from ripping off every hot new product that holds in the headlines for more than a few months, can it? https://twitter.com/...

Does Facebook have one fresh idea or do they need to swipe them all? Listen to my Sway interview this week with @SubstackInc ceo @cjgbest, who appears to be the latest to be shoplifted by the social media giant: https://www.nytimes.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Facebook is developing a Substack-like tool for writers. That's awesome because they also made that Medium-like tool (Notes) and forced people to pay to reach Fans on their Pages, and have done all that other stuff to get creators paid (Example Not Found) https://www.nytimes.com/…

As someone who writes a reasonably successful newsletter, let me just say I would burn it to ash before letting Facebook touch anything about it. https://twitter.com/...
  • @econ_marshall Marshall Steinbaum on x
I took away your livelihood as online journalists so you went to newsletters. Now please host your newsletter on my platform. https://twitter.com/...
  • @juddlegum Judd Legum on x
One of the keys to developing a successful independent newsletter is gaining the trust of your readers. Partnering with a company that makes money through data harvesting and surveillance probably isn't a great way to start. https://twitter.com/...

allow us to strongly suggest, to any writers or journalists who pay attention to us, that if you're switching the bulk of your content creation to a new platform it should NOT be the same oppressive monopoly that has already done so much harm to your industry https://twitter.com/…
  • @simonowens Simon Owens on x
Pretty safe to say at this point that newsletters are the new shiny object that all the platforms are gonna chase. Which I guess is better than every platform rolling out a Stories tool that nobody wants. https://twitter.com/...

  • @morninggloria @morninggloria on x
    @MikeIsaac No thanks
  • @sdw Sebastiaan de With on x
@MikeIsaac I wonder when we'll start just naming it: Facebook is copying. It's not ‘Facebook is building X’. Facebook is copying existing products, which is the majority of their product strategy and activity. Often down to the design minutiae.
  • @mgsiegler M.G. Siegler on x
Some may also recall back in the Middle Ages when Facebook was going to reinvent email itself. That worked as well as most of Facebook's non-acquired efforts... https://twitter.com/...
  • @robpegoraro Rob Pegoraro on x
Absolutely. Goddamn. Not. Indie writers and journalists, ask over-40 news types if they still feel great about the time and resources their newsrooms sank into social-reader apps, pivoting to video, and Instant Articles. Then duck. https://twitter.com/...

Be sure to handover your e-mail list to Facebook. No way that'll go bad for you. In no way Facebook will just discontinue this in a year or so. Like they did Notes. Remember Notes? No? Exactly. https://twitter.com/...

Facebook is inventing.... Substack! Very Never-th Century to think the route to riches is actually inventing stuff yourself. Facebook was one of dozens of similar networks... and hundreds of acquisitions & oodles of misbehavior later, Myanmar had a genocide & the USA got Trump. h…
