I wonder what's so big and important that Apple's ‘head of creating new hardware’ moves to do it full time?

Apple moving Riccio to a “New Project” (think something that requires serious cross-deparmental hardware chops from chips to ID) and Ternus promoted to SVP of hardware. https://www.apple.com/...

Apple can't tell us what Riccio is working on, but it's “a new project”, “something new and wonderful that I couldn't be more excited about” 👀 https://twitter.com/...

Apple: “ Dan Riccio (SVP hardware engineering) will move to a new role focusing on a new project and reporting to CEO Tim Cook” 🤔🚗👓🥽

Four departures from Apple's executive team since 2019: Angela Ahrendts, Jony Ive, Phil Schiller, and now Dan Riccio - though the latter of course both new in roles at the company. COO Jeff Williams remains the only person on Tim Cook's executive team who was there under Jobs.

Sounds like Riccio is taking on a Bob Mansfield-like role. Mansfield was / is a HW guru who saw eye to eye with Apple design. Apple relied on Mansfield for various tasks said to be too hard or difficult for anyone else. He helped develop Apple Watch w/ Jony and Jeff Williams.
