Slack confirmed it suffered a widespread outage Monday morning but resolved most problems as of 3pm ET, except for some integrations and email notifications

Context & Ripple Effects

The reported recovery follows Slack's six-hour outage in October 2020, when degraded performance had already recurred within the same week. Monday's incident began as the morning-wide outage covered the previous day; the later update narrows the remaining failures to integrations and email notifications.

The subsequent coverage records further Slack disruptions affecting message delivery, loading, search, and DNS, making this recovery update part of a recurring reliability record rather than an isolated status notice.

First-order effects

  • Slack users regain most core access, while customers whose workflows depend on integrations or email notifications remain partially affected after 3pm ET.
  • Slack must restore connected services separately from the main app, extending incident recovery for teams that rely on those functions.

Second-order effects

  • Teams using Slack integrations face a mismatch between restored chat access and incomplete workflow alerts or connected tools, concentrating operational disruption among more deeply integrated customers.
  • The incident adds weight to Slack's later outage record, including a worldwide DNS-related disruption, as customers assess service reliability across both messaging and supporting systems.

Third-order effects

  • If outages repeatedly leave integrations and notifications behind after core chat recovers, collaboration platforms will increasingly be judged as end-to-end workflow infrastructure rather than standalone messaging services.

The trend: Workplace collaboration services are becoming more operationally consequential as messaging, notifications, and third-party integrations function as one connected workflow layer.

I've heard bosses at various newsrooms have mulled pulling the plug on Slack over the last year. I suspect some will see this as a controlled experiment

why does slack being down have the same energy as when teachers didn't show up for class in high school and someone said “we're legally allowed to leave if they don't show up in 15 minutes”

Classic Jedi PM trick: Ignore a Slack thread with a product question for an hour, and on a good team, it resolves itself. On a bad team, it'll nucleate into a production bug or feature fail down the line. Either way, you know where you are.
