eBird started in 2002 as a sightings database and has grown into the default record-keeping layer for global birding, now absorbing more than 120 million observations a year. That scale makes it less a hobby tool than shared infrastructure — which is exactly why it sits inside an unresolved design question: the same coverage showed that public nature-mapping databases have had to rebuild their systems to hide endangered-species locations from poachers (hiding endangered-species locations from poachers), so openness is no longer the default setting.
