Inside Ovarit, an invite-only Reddit-like site founded by members of the “trans-exclusionary radical feminists” subreddit r/GenderCritical that Reddit banned

Mary Kate Fain, a 27-year-old engineer and writer living in Houston, has always considered herself a feminist. Tweets: @sullydish , @elongreen , @sullydish , @fake_minnesotan , @katymontgomerie , @alisonphipps , and @mimmymum Tweets: Andrew Sullivan / @sullydish : “Completely unimpeded speech for some—those who want to express hate—inherently limits speech for others.” How? https://www.theatlantic.com/ ... Elon Green / @elongreen : There's lots about this piece that I like, but I wish it had drawn fuller portraits of, you know, TERFs. If you weren't already acquainted w/ their work—or totally new to TERFs generally—you might come away from this story unaware of how bigoted they are. https://www.theatlantic.com/ ... Andrew Sullivan / @sullydish : This piece calls criticism of critical gender theory a form of hate. But never tells us what the criticism actually is. Why not? Why not be fair to the arguments of both sides? https://www.theatlantic.com/ ... Sister Winter / @fake_minnesotan : everything about this is horrifying but I just can't get over the fact that they named their website “ovarit.” it's like a heavy-handed parody of second-wave feminism https://twitter.com/... Katy Montgomerie / @katymontgomerie : This stuff is interesting but tbh pretty scary. Worthwhile read for sure. It's about what happens to extremists groups like Gender Critical when they get kicked off mainstream platforms like Medium and Reddit https://twitter.com/... Alison Phipps / @alisonphipps : An excellent piece by @kait_tiffany on the online radicalisation of ‘gender critical’ feminists (TERFs) and what happened when they were banned from Reddit - in my book I compare them to GamerGate, and they are getting worse and worse https://www.theatlantic.com/ ... @mimmymum : TERFs *really* don't like it when you expose their sordid, toxic underbelly, and will sling mud at anything else as a distraction tactic! https://twitter.com/...

Context & Ripple Effects

When Reddit banned r/GenderCritical, the community's answer was not to argue for reinstatement but to rebuild: engineer Mary Kate Fain and other former subreddit members launched Ovarit, an invite-only Reddit-style forum where they control the rules. The move follows a well-worn path — earlier alt-right alternatives to major social networks mostly failed to attract talent, users, and funding after being pushed off mainstream platforms.

First-order effects

  • Reddit sheds the moderation burden and reputational exposure of r/GenderCritical entirely, while Ovarit's founders take on hosting, moderation tooling, and anti-spam work with no platform infrastructure behind them.

Second-order effects

  • The ban-and-rebuild cycle gives Reddit a cleaner template for enforcing rules on other contested communities, because exit routes reduce the backlash of removal — and gives future banned communities a replicable playbook, as the parallel Tattle Life forum shows insular, self-moderated spaces can sustain activity at small scale.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds — exile sites surviving as dense enclaves rather than scaling like the open alternatives that collapsed — moderation disputes migrate from public platforms to private invite-only corners of the web that sit largely outside mainstream platform governance.

The trend: Content-moderation bans are pushing controversial communities from shared platforms toward self-run, invitation-gated forums, testing whether niche cohesion can substitute for network effects.
