Babelfish is the latest move in a decade-long AWS campaign against Microsoft's enterprise base: after opening Database Migration Service to all customers in 2016 and launching FSx for Windows File Server explicitly to sway customers from Microsoft in 2018, AWS is now attacking the deepest layer of lock-in — the SQL Server engine itself.
The timing matters because Microsoft had been fortifying its own ground, updating Azure services for SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL to keep those workloads on its cloud.
