AWS announces Babelfish for Aurora PostgreSQL, which aims to make it easier and cheaper for Microsoft SQL Server users to migrate to the AWS cloud

Babelfish is the latest move in a decade-long AWS campaign against Microsoft's enterprise base: after opening Database Migration Service to all customers in 2016 and launching FSx for Windows File Server explicitly to sway customers from Microsoft in 2018, AWS is now attacking the deepest layer of lock-in — the SQL Server engine itself.

The timing matters because Microsoft had been fortifying its own ground, updating Azure services for SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL to keep those workloads on its cloud. Babelfish flips the script: instead of customers choosing between clouds for SQL Server, AWS offers a path off the engine entirely, onto Aurora PostgreSQL.

First-order effects

  • SQL Server applications can now run on Aurora PostgreSQL with minimal code changes, removing the rewrite cost that historically kept Microsoft database workloads anchored to Windows and Azure.
  • Microsoft loses its strongest migration deterrent — application compatibility — at exactly the moment its Azure database updates were positioning SQL Server as a reason to choose Azure over AWS.

Second-order effects

  • Microsoft is pushed to compete on managed-instance fidelity and pricing rather than lock-in, since the default answer to 'should we leave SQL Server?' just got cheaper on the AWS side.
  • Aurora becomes AWS's wedge product for enterprise accounts already buying Windows infrastructure, extending the FSx playbook from file storage into the database tier where switching costs are highest.

Third-order effects

  • PostgreSQL compatibility consolidates as the industry's neutral landing zone for proprietary database workloads — a pattern AWS doubled down on with Aurora DSQL's PostgreSQL compatibility and that startups like Neon are now building entire businesses around.
  • If engine-level translation keeps improving, database choice decouples from cloud choice, shifting competition among AWS, Microsoft, and Google toward price and managed-service quality rather than data gravity.

The trend: Cloud providers are converging on PostgreSQL compatibility as the universal on-ramp for absorbing rivals' database workloads, steadily dissolving engine-level lock-in across the industry.
