Google is testing Project Guideline, an AI-powered system that enables navigation guidance for low-vision people, allowing them to run races by themselves

Project Guideline is the running-specific entry in a long Google accessibility arc: Lookout was already in development in 2018 to give visually impaired users auditory cues about objects and text around them, and back in 2017 the Google.org-backed Wayfindr open standard won ITU approval for beacon-based audio navigation of public spaces. Where those systems orient a user in an environment, Guideline applies the same sensor-plus-AI approach to a narrow, high-motion task — following a painted course unassisted.

The timing also foreshadows where this line converges: four years later Google would tease Project Astra, a camera-based AI processing visual data in real time, demoed on smart glasses — essentially the hardware form Guideline implies but which did not yet exist as a consumer product.

  • Low-vision runners gain race participation without human guides, the first concrete use case being course-following during organized runs rather than general street navigation.
