Instagram revamps its standalone mobile messaging app Threads with an updated navigation and Status tab, support for posting photos and videos to Stories, more

Instagram is continuing to develop its standalone messaging app, Threads.  Last month, the company modified the app to make it possible …

TechCrunch Sarah Perez

Context & Ripple Effects

Threads began in 2019 as an Instagram companion built around Close Friends sharing with auto-status drawn from location, motion, and battery, and this revamp — a Status tab, reworked navigation, and the ability to push photos and videos straight to Stories — is Instagram's attempt to give that niche app a broader job. The timing matters: it landed a year before Instagram decided the experiment had run its course and shut the standalone app down by December 31, 2021.

The name, however, outlived the product. Meta later recycled Threads for its 2023 Twitter competitor, which logged in via Instagram and grew to 500 million monthly active users — so this 2020 update is best read as the last major push of the companion-app era before the brand was repurposed for a very different fight.

First-order effects

  • Threads users get a Status tab and one-tap posting of photos and videos to Instagram Stories, turning the app from a private messaging utility into a camera-and-status companion tied to the main Instagram surface.
  • Instagram's Close Friends audience — the teen-heavy segment it was courting through influencer and algorithm adjustments — is the direct beneficiary of a more visual, less text-centric Threads.

Second-order effects

  • The revamp failed to change Threads' trajectory: Instagram pulled the plug on the standalone app within about a year, folding its status-sharing job back toward the main app and freeing engineering effort.
  • Killing the app cleared the Threads name for reuse, letting Meta launch the 2023 Twitter competitor with an established Instagram login and follow graph instead of a cold start.

Third-order effects

  • The episode sketches a pattern now standard at Meta: standalone companion apps survive only while the parent app's social graph feeds them, and their brand equity gets recycled into new bets rather than retired — a discipline the 2023 Threads relaunch exploited to reach half a billion monthly users.
  • For the broader industry, it reinforces that second-screen apps tied to a dominant platform are effectively feature experiments with app-store packaging, not durable products in their own right.

The trend: Meta's standalone companion apps are increasingly disposable experiments whose value is folded back into the main platform or recycled as brands for bigger bets, with the Threads name's 2023 rebirth as a Twitter rival the clearest case.
