Twitter rolls out Fleets, its ephemeral Stories feature, globally, and says it plans to test an audio-based social networking feature similar to Clubhouse

Twitter this morning is launching its own version of Stories — aka “Fleets” — to its global user base.

TechCrunch Sarah Perez

Context & Ripple Effects

Eight months after starting Fleets in a Brazil-only test of posts that vanish after 24 hours, Twitter has pushed the Stories format to its entire global base — and used the same announcement to flag a coming test of an audio product modeled on Clubhouse. That second signal landed first: by mid-December Twitter had put Spaces into private iOS beta, moving on Clubhouse's core format within a month of naming it.

The rollout now reads as a fork in outcomes. Fleets never found traction and was retired in August 2021 after low adoption, while Spaces outlived it — and the format race kept running without Twitter, with TikTok testing its own Stories days after Fleets shut down.

First-order effects

  • Every Twitter user gains a secondary, disappearing layer above the timeline, shifting casual posting away from permanent tweets toward lower-stakes sharing.
  • Clubhouse moves from novel startup to cloned format overnight, since the platform with hundreds of millions of logged-in users has publicly committed to building the same product.

Second-order effects

  • Clubhouse's defense shifts from format ownership to community and creator quality, because distribution advantages now sit entirely with incumbents who can ship lookalike features.
  • The Stories format becomes a checkbox across platforms rather than a differentiator — TikTok adding its own version shows the copy cycle compressing to weeks, not years.

Third-order effects

  • Feature velocity replaces feature novelty as the competitive axis: large platforms can replicate any viral format, so standalone apps like Clubhouse must convert attention into durable networks before the clones arrive — a pattern Fleets' failure also illustrates, showing that shipping a copied feature guarantees neither adoption nor retention.

The trend: Social platforms are converging on a shared menu of formats — Stories, live audio — where incumbents clone whatever works and standalone apps compete on community rather than features.

Too many 🔥 Tweets are left in drafts, and we know some people feel Tweets are too permanent. That's why we're introducing a new way to join the public conversation with your fleeting thoughts - Fleets. This way, your hot takes and typos only stick around for 24 hours. https://twi…

“To help people feel more comfortable, we've been working on a lower pressure way for people to talk about what's happening. Today, we're launching Fleets so everyone can easily join the conversation in a new way - with their fleeting thoughts.” https://blog.twitter.com/...

“Unlike typical tweets, Fleets do not receive retweets, likes or public replies. Users can only react or respond to them with direct messages, much like on Instagram and Snapchat.” - @kyurieff https://www.cnn.com/...

Fleets are a new, low pressure way to share text, photos, videos, and Tweets, and they disappear in 24 hours. Once you see your profile image in the new bar across the top of your app's Home timeline, tap it to get started. https://twitter.com/...

Encouraging! Twitter has confirmed it's working on an audio feature like Clubhouse, but they'll first test it with “a group of people who are disproportionately impacted by abuse and harm on the platform: women and those from marginalized backgrounds.” https://techcrunch.com/...

Twitter appears to be worried people will start being nicer to each other. So is offering a way to be vile for just one day. Unless somebody takes a screenshot. Also do they really know what's in our drafts? https://twitter.com/...

one thing i would love is if twtr took the FB approach and spun off DMs into a separate (more powerful/functional) app. So people can deal with just DM's separately, or do it in the full app if they want something they've noodled with over the years at least https://twitter.com/.…
