The October fee collapse is the mirror image of the summer run-up Glassnode and DappRadar had already charted: DeFi drove dapp activity doubling in Q2 and pushed Ethereum's quarterly volume to $119.5B in Q3, 99% of it from DeFi apps — congestion that made September's $166.4M fee record possible. With DeFi transaction volume falling, the paid-for blockspace went with it.

What makes this worth tracking is how concentrated Ethereum's revenue is in one app category: when speculative DeFi activity cools, network fee income — the only revenue miners collect beyond block rewards — falls by roughly two-thirds in a single month.
