Sources: Jeffrey Katzenberg tried to sell Quibi's catalog to NBCUniversal and Facebook, but both passed; Katzenberg told others he may shut down the company
Jeffrey Katzenberg may be nearing the end of the road with his mobile video streaming service Quibi.
Today's report narrows that list: Katzenberg had already struck out with Apple, WarnerMedia, and Facebookin an earlier round of buyout pitches, and now NBCUniversal and Facebook have passed on even buying just the catalog — leaving shutdown as the path he was telling people he might take.
First-order effects
Katzenberg's remaining exit is liquidation rather than sale: with both whole-company buyers and catalog buyers gone, Quibi's investors face writing off their stakes instead of recouping them through an acquirer.
The next-day confirmation from Whitman and Katzenberg that they are shutting down makes this report effectively the final chapter — every option short of closure was tried and rejected by counterparties.
Second-order effects
Hollywood studios and telecom-backed streamers who passed on the catalog signal that premium short-form mobile content has no clearing price even at distressed terms — a warning to any producer building shows sized for phones.
Facebook's dual role is telling: it declined to buy Quibi while separately testing its own full-screen immersive video player, suggesting platforms would rather build feed-native video than absorb a studio-built app.
Third-order effects
If the pattern holds, subscription video consolidates around incumbents with distribution already attached — the same logic behind NBCUniversal putting Peacock inside YouTube Premium bundles — while standalone, content-only apps become structurally unviable without a platform parent.
A ~$2B write-down on celebrity-led short-form video sets the reference point for how investors underwrite the next wave of mobile-first premium content ventures.
The trend: Premium mobile-only streaming is collapsing back into platforms that own distribution, as standalone apps built on star content alone prove unable to find buyers at any price.

Appears Quibi is at the end of the line: “strategy meetings have been cancelled, according to two people familiar with the matter. Some employees have informally been scheduling goodbye drinks” https://www.theinformation.com/ ...
This is a great case study: Validate your product before investing silly money. I know of a few other companies that fell into the same trap. https://twitter.com/...

Quibi is almost done 400k subs (unclear how many of them paid); the plan was for 7.4m at EOY1 Strategy meetings have been cancelled and some employees have informally been scheduling goodbye drinks $1.5B gone; I'm looking forward to the post-mortems https://www.theinformation.com…
Rich people starting start-ups is good in that they swing for huge outcomes But also, they can just walk away anytime if they want Especially if it doesn't go their way https://twitter.com/...
I know it may not be the popular take but any entertainment company failing is not something to celebrate with the entire industry suffering at the moment. A misguided venture but it's failure will mean more jobs lost https://twitter.com/...
This isn't just “nobody wants to buy the money pit,” it's “people don't even really to buy the component parts of the money pit that could be useful elsewhere” https://twitter.com/...
I think often of how many people in media showed how little they understood their own industry by raving about Quibi's genius. https://www.theinformation.com/ ...
Quibi started at an interesting moment, being a mobile only video service while we were all trapped in front of giant television sets. And it didn't help that during its launch, TikTok and Snapchat were both growing to be bigger, sometimes better, places for very similar ideas. h…
Oh man - I would have thought NBC or FB or GOOG would have rescued the content but damn it's got this much stink on it. Ah well. https://twitter.com/...
@Techmeme It's amazing that from the moment this was announced regular degular people knew it wouldn't work and yet they persisted. Feel bad for a lot of good artists who did work on this platform hopefully they'll be able to move those ideas elsewhere.
The best thing about Quibi is the deal producers of its shows got: After two years, they can repackage/reformat their Quibi shows, turning them into feature docs, or, you know, regular-length shows. It'll be interesting to see if/where some of its shows end up. https://twitter.co…
If a video streaming startup that has raised $1.75 Bn and launched in the midst of a once-in-a-century global pandemic where consumers are staying at home and consuming content like there's no tomorrow has to shut down, then, maybe, just maybe, it's the execution... https://twitt…
