An ISP took down the website for the group calling itself The Real Facebook Oversight Board after Facebook complained that the site was involved in “phishing”

and no one at FB knew until @carolecadwalla approached FB and then they restored it — is that accurate, Carole? Olivia Solon / @oliviasolon : This is wonderfully petty https://twitter.com/... Mathew Ingram / @mathewi : How bone-headed do you have to be not to see that taking this kind of action against your worst critics is going to blow up in your face? Truly mind-boggling https://www.vice.com/... via @vice Andy Stone / @andymstone : @oliviasolon @FBoversight We remove trademark violations to prevent bad actors from setting up websites which could cause confusion, or be used for phishing attacks, fraud, or scams. Olivia Solon / @oliviasolon : But to fair it is quite in keeping with the trolling vibe of the Real Facebook Oversight Board @FBoversight Andy Stone / @andymstone : @oliviasolon @FBoversight We're not trying to shut their website down. It appears the site was flagged by our domain protection vendor as it contains the word ‘facebook’ in the domain. Andy Stone / @andymstone : @oliviasolon @FBoversight We've conveyed all of this to the board. And as we told Carole yesterday when she alerted us, we are working to lift any restrictions that are in place with internet service providers. Carole Cadwalladr / @carolecadwalla : The most disturbing aspect of this entire shitshow is how Facebook's corporate comms have gone full Trump. Charles Arthur / @charlesarthur : Something of a challenge to think of a site name for the Real Facebook Oversight Board that doesn't use “Facebook”. Carole Cadwalladr / @carolecadwalla : If you missed the fun last night, Facebook conceded @FBoversight's first demand over political ads. Facebook appears to have taken action over the use of the domain name realfacebookoversight.com

@carolecadwalla Your fake thing that accuses us of fake things was caught in our thing to prevent fake things.

NEW: Facebook took legal action today to get Real Facebook Oversight Board shut down. It successfully succeeded in pressuring the ISP to remove the site from the web. Nice work, @nick_clegg! You must be #proud 👍 https://twitter.com/...

Apropos of nothing... 1) Lookalike domains are a big contributor to phishing attacks 2) Every major consumer brand pays a vendor to find and takedown these domains (biggest is MarkMonitor) 3) Some companies own millions of lookalikes 4) Never forget: https://twitter.com/...

As a member of the Board that Facebook just blocked, I don't know whether to feel more outraged or honored. I've never been forced offline before. Being in virtual exile with @carolecadwalla & @shoshanazuboff feels better than being Zucked! https://www.vice.com/...

Right now we double down, demanding effective measures to protect the 2020 election and the peaceful transfer of power. But after this crisis, it's time to reinvent social media for people. Enough of this. Enough. 4/4 https://www.vice.com/...

In other words, Facebook uses PR as a weapon to suppress criticism, spin propaganda and cover-up atrocities. There is a significant body of evidence at this time. Andy Stone is just going down with the ship. Options must be good enough. Sad. https://twitter.com/...

I hadn't actually clocked this till @vice pointed it out. Facebook's spokesman calling Real Facebook Oversight Board ‘a fake thing’ that has accused Facebook of ‘fake things’. @andymstone, in journalism, we send right-to-replies before making accusations. I await your email https…

Trademark claims? Seriously? What an utterly idiotic thing to do: “Real Facebook Oversight Board website down after trademark claims” (btw the group still seems to be on Facebook itself? In addition to on Twitter here @FBoversight) https://www.rappler.com/...

Friendly reminder that Facebook - which has just forced one of its watchdogs offline - is one of the biggest funders of journalism research, conferences, and internships. We also share post content to it. It's an MNC with tendrils in every structure and activity of our industry. …

The allegation Facebook is making is that any use of the name Facebook to discuss Facebook must be a phishing site, which is an affront to the notion of the free speech that Facebook allegedly facebooks facebook facebook. https://twitter.com/...

@oliviasolon @carolecadwalla @mathewi My sources at FB tell me that the site tripped an automated system that protects FB's trademark — and no one at FB knew until @carolecadwalla approached FB and then they restored it — is that accurate, Carole?
