Sound Notifications is the third beat in Google's run at audio accessibility on Android. It began with Live Transcribe and Sound Amplifier as Pixel 3 apps in early 2019, then Google added saved transcriptions and on-screen indicators for door knocks, dog barks, and ringing phones to Live Transcribe that May. The new feature closes the loop: instead of showing a sound indicator only when the app is open, the phone now pushes an alert when a critical household sound occurs.
