Comcast says symmetrical gigabit upload and download speeds can be achieved through cable internet, detailing a trial using a hybrid fiber-cable network

Comcast's upload problem has been the story since its gigabit era began: the company's 2016 Atlanta gigabit launch delivered just 35Mbps uploads against Google Fiber's symmetrical service at the same $70/month price. The fix was always supposed to come from the cable side of the house — Comcast committed back in 2015 to upgrading its whole network to 10 Gbps-capable DOCSIS 3.1, and Time Warner Cable made the same bet that D3.1 could push multi-gigabit speeds over hybrid fiber/coax in LA.

This trial is the payoff of that arc: Comcast now claims the hybrid fiber-cable plant itself can carry symmetrical gigabit traffic, meaning the upload gap that justified fiber overbuilds may close without new fiber to the home.

First-order effects

  • Comcast gains a direct answer to the one spec where fiber competitors beat its cable tiers — a subscriber comparing its 35Mbps-upload gigabit product to symmetrical fiber no longer gets an automatic reason to switch.
